New to forum, seeking advice
« on: September 06, 2007, 12:24:01 AM »

Great forum.  I’ve been following for a few weeks but this is my first post.

Until fishing a few weeks ago on the Bulkley River, I hadn’t fished in over 20 years.  I maxed out on Pink in less than 30 minutes, average weight 6-7lbs, all released.  Now… I’m hooked! and hoping for a little guidance for the lower mainland’s hot spots!

I plan on camping near Hope with the family this weekend.  Any advice on where and when to bank fish for Springs/Pink/Coho?  No boat.

I loaded up on various colours/sizes of Gibbs Kit-i-mats, Coho, Crocs, spinners, etc.  I suspect tying these direct to line will be simple and effective?  no leader necessary?  Cast far and retrieve slowly as close to river bed as possible?  I heard weights made from lead are no longer permissible (?) but couldn’t find confirmation from government websites.

Any advice will be most appreciated.  Hoping to get lucky in Hope!   :)

I prefer leaders for my spoons and spinners. The use of lead weights is still permitted.

The fish are just starting to come through Chilliwack in decent catchable numbers, so Hope is still a bit of a gamble. As for springs, they are coming through real nice right now, but finding some space on the weekend could get hard with the amount of guys out there.

Is there an advantage to this, do you put another swivel to your mainline and tie the leader to that?
Curious cause I've never used a leader with my spoons.

I use a snap swivel to the end of my main line and tie my leader to a swivel. Makes changing lures a snap (no pun intended)

I thread my main line through a large bright-coloured plastic bead (you can buy packs in the tackle shops) so that the bead is above the hardware.  This makes it easier to see the swivel and snap, so you don't wind the hardware into the tip guide.  Also, the bead stops the swivel's metal from chipping the inside ring of the guide when you get careless.
