Coho are Coming (and so are the Chum)
« on: September 13, 2007, 09:52:44 AM »

I look forward to heading out to the vedder and other local rivers for some silver action. I plan to fish a lot more on the fly this year. I also look forward to the chum fishery that is very close to starting. Targeting them on the fly right when they're fresh out of the ocean is good fun, plus they are a great way to get people into salmon fishing, seeing as they are a wee bit bigger than the pinks.

Good luck to all, and i look forward to hearing your reports.

Where abouts are you talking about? I have heard the opposite from people I know on the west coast of VI who say it has been much better than in past years.

LOL!!!

The guys you've been talking are doing so because Spring action has been so off/on/off.

According to your pal Iron Noggin fish on the outside are 'starving' because of lack of feed-he posted that on BCfishingreports.

That may have some basis in fact because Coho on the Outside are not the size they have been years past-8# is called large this year where as in past years it was so/so.

Yes there are more fish Inside but nothing like years past, lotsa bait though all kinds.

The Coho I got in Port Alberni last weekend was approximately 6 pounds and had a large head and very skinny body.

The fish I've landed so far have been very healthy... Not a runt in the lot.

Cheers,

One of the creel survey guys told me the commercials got 560,000 cohos last year up from 10,000 ten years ago, I don't where he got his figures but it would sure explain the slow coho fishing the last couple of years. He also told me that there were no records as to how many were hatchery and how many were wild or anything like that, I wish I knew why this wasn't  more of a concern to sports anglers or at least more common knowledge. On the bright side those chums don't seem to be a primary commercial target yet so bring em on, my rod needs a bending.

Go to albion test fishery, look under commercial catch statistics , pick year and salmon by district in pieces at bottom of page. Recreational catches also can be found at this site.

I agree with Nicole! Ther are lots of coho this year and big ones too. All indications to me are that it's going to be a good year for them everywhere.
