GREAT WEEKEND ON THE CHILLIWACK
« on: September 23, 2007, 07:39:40 PM »

Went out for some coho action yesterday and today.
Didn't see a single coho, but got a 40+ pound surprise last night at last light, which I battled for half an hour on my coho setup ::):

It wasn't easy to land this big bugger with a ten pound test leader.

Here's the mandatory hero shot:

I had no means to weigh it. My buddy Tad says it's over 40 pounds. It sure felt even heavier to carry it all the way back to the car.
What do you say? How many pounds in this spring? Maybe this shot can help you with the guesstimate:

Today, I was much better prepared for springs. The flyrod stayed home and so did my Berkley noodle rod. Out came the TFO, the Abu 6000 and the 12 pound test leader. I was rewarded with this beauty:

Not big by any standards, but there was a big surprise when I cleaned it:

The flesh was more red than white.
Is this what people call the marbled chinook?
I have never seen flesh like this. It is quite orange in the middle, but white on the back and at the belly.
The taste is superb!

Definitely, a fun and rewarding weekend. :)

Wow!  I woulda thought the fish to be "bad" somehow to have sides with different colours!!!

Nice fish. Congrats Milo. Yes, the marble spring is very special to the taste bud indeed. Had one many years ago, and still remember its distinctive taste in sashimi. I'll trade yours with a red spring.  ;D

Congratulations milo, beautiful spring.  Looks like you were also able to keep away from the crowds.

I agree with minne judging by the picture of you lifting it 30 to 35 any heavier and you would show more strain in your face. As for your comment on carrying it back to the truck, I know the feeling. Try bringing a backpack (full size with backboard) next time, you will find it a big help.

The fish is resting on my upper leg...hence the smile.  ;)
There was quite a bit of strain as I was lifting it.
Besides, I stand at 260 pounds on a 6' 4" frame. It always makes my fish look smaller than what they really are.  :-[

I dunno...I like to think of that big spring as a 40 pounder, as it was definitely heavier than a measured 35 pounder I caught a couple years ago.
But ultimately, as Roy said, it really doesn't matter. It sure remains a memorable fish! :)
