How are you all attaching your roe to your hook. I've learned to tie the roe knot, but do you tie it directly or do you use that mesh that tackle shops sell?
There are several different ways that you can do this. Personally I like to carry my roe in one large piece in my bait box, and cut a small chunk when I would like to put one on the hook. I usually just thread it onto the hook a couple of times, and secure it with the bait loop/roe knot. This usually lasts about a dozen or two dozens drifts (depends on how often the fish bite, sometimes only one drift
). This method requires you to cure the roe properly in advance, and I generally like to fish slower water where the current is not strong enough to rip the roe off when I retrieve it.
Some people use the roe sac tying thread to secure the roe on the hook by wrapping it several times instead of the bait loop.
The second way would be to cut them into small chunks at home, and tie them into roe bags. You can get the mesh in tacklestores like you said. This is a cleaner, more convenient way as you just have to take a roe bag out of your box everytime and thread it onto the hook. It is a great method if you like to fish faster water so the roe does not get washed away so easily. I however, don't find sacs work as well as chunks when fishing for coho unfortunately. Others may have different experiences.
