Newb here...how do you make/cure roe? Etc.
« on: September 27, 2007, 09:46:10 AM »

Hey all,

I'd like to learn how to use roe but don't know first thing about it.  I know I got some cause pulled it our of the coho that I got and froze it(roe) but thats as far as I got...lol.  Any helpful info would be muchly appreciated, not asking for any trade secrets, just some basic stuff.  How do you mix it and with what, curing, etc?  How do you hook it on?  I've tried to find previous post on it but was unsuccessful.  Links would do as well.

Thanks

Here are some sample sites with different recipes and tips.

Basically, common themes are:  start with good fresh roe that is clean and has no blood on it.  So start by making sure you bleed your fish right away. A gazillion different recipes and after awhile they all start looking similar.  But, they all do the same thing:  you want to toughen the eggs enough so they stay on the hook but still milk scent while in water.  Adding scents to your finished product is also a neat little tip...

Take your pick, and experiment. I prefer a variation of the brine technique myself, over commercial cures like Procure.  Less messy I find.

Just so you know, the eggs you froze are probably trash now.  I find that uncured eggs that are frozen turn into a big sloppy mess once thawed.  Apparently the ice crystals that form inside an egg can puncture the uncured shell...unfortunately that stuff is probably garbage now.

Procure is a dead easy cure to use and makes very effective bait.

One tip, before you freeze your roe, chill it in the fridge.  The quicker roe freezes, the smaller the ice crystals are, the smaller the crystals are, the less potential damage to the roe.

3 parts mule borax 1/2 part sugar, cut roe into pieces and put inside, cover nicely, put alot of borax, when storing put borax on bottom of container, then put 1 layer of eggs, more borax to completely cover them, until container is full.

Easiest way, then come pro-cure. that stuff is super simple too. I like flame orange the best.
