« on: October 14, 2007, 11:01:31 AM »

Hello Everyone,
I have been off the internet for about 8 months now so just getting back into it...

I would like to know if anyone can direct me to the Indian River for my first time...

1.Can i reach the fishable portions with my dirtbike?

2.Where is a good place to cast on foot once i reach it?

Thank you!

Its a beautiful  spot  down near the mouth years ago we caught tons of pinks early in sept but i havent been there in years .good luck and i

pink, chinook, coho, not sure about chum..... all c&r and if you go be careful, know a guy who was recently followed by a VERY large cougar up there. you need a motor bike and it is not a short jaunt by any stretch of the imagination so go prepared. have never been up there but have heard it is beautiful. yes there are elk in the area which are apparently why the gate has been closed. not sure if the c.o.'s have been up there but have heard about them hanging around the gate.....

good luck and travel safe if you go up there, lots of wildlife through there.

cooked a chrome pink on the river bank for lunch as we fished for more.

There is no pink salmon retention allowed in the Indian River.

Indian R. has coho, chinook, chum, pink, a few sockeye and also steelhead.  Chum and pinks are more abundant, but chinook, coho, sockeye and steelhead only a few.   Stawamus/Indian River FSR is closed due to bridge washout.  It's not been fixed for a while.  That FSR leads to many great fly fishing lakes and Indian River.  It's very scenic but unfortunately it's closed to public access now;  even if you do have a dirt bike, you are not to access that road or you may be fined.

Dont sockeye require a lake to spawn? where would the indian river lake be? and dont say norton
Chinook is closed to retention as there are like a total of 6 fish in the system
Pinks, there are tons
chum youd be better off fishing the stave
and as for steelhead good luck

Sandhead, origional poster wants to know whats in there, so I'm just answering the question.

Indian River is closed for any type of salmon retention.  So really if you are after retaining fish Indian River is not your pick.  But if you fish the mouth in the tidal area, you'll get some pinks and chum.  Sockeye does not need lakes to spawn.  Adams river sockeye spawn in the river.  It's just that if there is a lake in the system their young has better survival rate.  Indian River is all wild stock only so, don't expect much in terms of chinook, coho, sockeye, and steelhead when CnR for them.

My hook and bullet club, Vancouver Angling and Game Association, annually assists to feed 7000 chinook smolts held  in a net pen off Ioco for release at that location.  We don't know where the returning fish go but the Indian River is the most likley option.
