Fishing Reports Forum, can we make it members only?
« on: October 25, 2007, 06:46:14 AM »

A lot of websites have certain forums only accessible if you are member.

I'd like to see the fishing Reports section go that way.

Seems we have more lurkers then participants:

I think it is a great idea. They should be a member with a certain amount of posts before they can view any fishing reports.

As a relative newbie, I think that is a little Animal Farmish - all animals are equal, but some are more equal than others???  :-[  What would blocking lurkers accomplish?  Generally, the fishing reports I've read are vague - aka "I fished the lower river" as opposed to "I fished my top secret Coho flow and here are the directions how to get there".  It's not like the report section is giving away military secrets!

When I first happened across this site, the fall salmon season was just getting underway.  The posts I read helped be understand in general terms what fish were showing up where.  It was refreshing to have access to real-time reports as opposed to week old reports from other sites and/or the Berry's recorded fishing report.  I lurked briefly before joining, but then again I am not very shy!  If some of these other lurkers never join the site, oh well, their loss.  For those that do, if they choose to post their own reports and partake in discussions that extend beyond post padding the one line "nice fish" posts then the collective intelligence and resources of this forum are increased and that benefits all.  Bottom line though, lurkers exist on every forum, some will never be more than that but for those that choose to join it should remain just that: a choice.

And who knows, those same lurkers reading reports may also be reading threads about proper fishing techniques, fish limits and general etiquette!!  It sure would be a shame for them to miss out on all that good information on the site that may influence their behaviour on the river! ;D

We were all lurkers at one time. Lurkers become members. Nothing will be gained from blocking future member.

I agree 100%

(do I have to type in caps for you  ??? )

I guess you did not read the part where I was referring to ONLY the "**fishing reports**" section - (THERE ARE OTHER SECTIONS)

Which (fishing reports) some other sites block as well.

Plus you have a side benefit of increasing membership.

After all this site is ALREADY blocking content if you are a "NON- SUBSCRIBER".

I may even share some tips but being that I am deemed a newbi, you get the picture.

Just a quick reminder... there are NO limitations on membership.  Monetary or otherwise.

Yup, I read it and caps not needed. Still see no value blocking content from those who do not wish to "join the club". There are lots of fishing sites out there and they are found through Google, Yahoo etc. These search engine index the available content on the site. Therefore, the more valuable, public content posted should mean more traffic and more members. Hide the content and the membership stagnates.
Just my opinion for what it worth.

I'm not in favour of subscribers only.... i'd rather have members only...
I'm out there fishing every weekend and I've stopped posting cause there isn't really any benefit to myself in posting reports, just invites more people to get out there.
And reports arnt really that useful as conditions change every day. On that note the Stave is full of rotten chum go get em!
