More Access Closures On The Horizon On The Vedder
« on: November 04, 2007, 10:11:13 AM »

I am sure most are aware the the Abbotford side of the Vedder Canal was closed to vehicle access a few months ago. Of course those that dump garbage and 4 wheel up and down the dykes gave the City of Abbotsford the ammunition they needed to close it.

Of course, if you remember we brought this up before it happened but some of those that were doing the damage and got on this forum and said they were being responsible etc. well we know in the long run many were not hence up went the gates, driving access gone.  That may be ok for the younger generation but it can be tough slugging for the grey haired angler.

Now it was brought to my attention this week the City Of Chilliwack staff is proposing the same thing on the opposite side of the Vedder Canal, from below the Feeway Bridge and right up to the gate at Salwein Gravel Pit (upstream of KWB).

The good thing is, we the Chilliwack Vedder River Cleanup Coalition and the Fraser Valley Salmon Society have a good working relationship with one of the City of Chilliwack's Councilors so we have asked to meet with him and staff to see if we can in some way save our access to this area.

In the meantime, could I suggest if you are a user of this area you can help by cleaning up the garbage, report garbage dumpers to the BC Conservation Service and if you see ATV and 4 by 4 drivers ripping up and down the dikes and through the riparian area politely tell them what this action could lead to, a total closure. :'(

A number of CVRCC and FVSS directors will do their best to save this area for us to use but it may have gone too far now. :-\

There is nothing worse than those stupid machines racing up and down the canal while you try to enjoy some fishing, I'm personally happy they are gone... I imagined stringing some wire at head length across the dyke, but that would not have ended well :)

I wish that the cities would have created some bylaws instead of closing the gates, but the illegal dumpers are a problem too. Far too many ignorant people out there, what happened?

I guess it's people moving to the area that have not grown up there, and have no respect for anyone, or anything.

Knowing people, the ATVers won't listen, and those gates will be up soon.

They should ban the sale of ATVs and dirtbikes to everyone but hunters until there is some sort of course available.

They're forcing all of us to take the boater course becuase of jet skis... So why not this?

I wonder if they would entertain giving keys to people who want them, if they can prove they have angling gear, and angling licence, and photo evidence they actually catch fish.

it is unfortunate that there are more and more idiots around.( we need to stop making baby's  ;))i understand your point Chris , but , i think it is awesome that they have shut her down.

i have spent many days up on the vedder in the Winter months and usually by about noon or 13:00 , i stop fishing and start to clean up the river banks on the way to my car. on more then one occasion i have picked up timi hoes cups and timbit packs just after guys toss them over their shoulder. it makes me sick to my stomach that there are anglers out there that have no problem cutting out a huge birds nest and leaving it on the beach along with empty smoke packs reel boxes and all kinds of crap from lures that they just picked up at Fred's! list goes on...

so with fishermen of this mentality i don't have a lot of hope for the "public" who don't give a rats my friend about the fish in the first place.it is a real shame to me that the planet is in the shape that it is and people still don't get it! how can anyone enjoy a day of fishing at a place like brownsville? it's discusting!

i apologize for the rant. ;)

why not just ban all vehicles ?
F.M.! only successfully anglers get keys ?
what about mobility challenged? don't you think they might have a problem with access ?
"incomers" sure are a problem ?

My point Sandy is that people should prove they actually catch fish is to discourage abuse... Anyone could buy a license and a rod and demand a key the same day, then we're no better than just leaving the gates open...

Of course give the handicapped access if they want it, I have no problems with that at all :)

I'm not happy with the closures, it severely limits access to some of my favorite spots...

A whole lot of walking seems to be coming, at least some pounds will be lost :)

Cheers,
Nicole

I didn`t know the Vedder Canal had Jet Boats  ;)

Cheers
Nuggy
They had been there several times and have gone up a far as Vedder Crossing at times. Some mishaps have occurred as well, not the brightest thing to do when there is so many anglers on the river, gravel bars and such but people are people. ::)

Nicole was talking land based traffic I am sure.

sorry Nicole didn't mean to flog you. wording could have been better.

I am vehemently apposed to any further restrictions to access of fishasble streams wether it be from private lor municipal landowners.

re: ATV and motorcycle access. all could be handled by speed and lane restrictions with financial penalties. are there not provincial offroad regulations coming into play now?

re: garbage dumping . report them, charge them , fine them ,penalize them. again penalties have to be a deterant !!

why should ordinary folks have extraordinary restrictions placed on them for a small minority's actions?

I, like a lot of other people, am sick and tired of anyone that dissrespect our fishing and hunting areas by dumping garbage, ripping up the ground with atv's and motorcycles, leaving anything behind except footprints, but restricting access can't be the only answer. I'm up there with Chris and  those long walks are just about getting too much to take, closing down the dykes because of abusers seems to me like closing down the freeway cause there are too many speeders. Put in regulations with big penalties and enforce them, fine their asses off if they disobey, closing down access just moves the problem to other areas, these abusers have to be taught to respect the areas they use. As for fishermen that litter the riverbanks while fishing, I believe that all that litter should be thrown into the river in a deep pool then all the fishermen caught littering should be thrown in after it to retrieve it, naked preferably.

You boys get a kill limit on the garbage dumpers and the atv nuts and i will do my part. As i told a RCMP officer who wanted me to identify a couple of guys running away with a gen set "was the fine going to be enough to pay for my expenses" if not was there going to be a public removal of a hand. If i was not going to be reimbursed then i wanted a deterrent to future crimes of the same nature. If i had gone to court as a witness  probably would have cost me a couple of days wages and those charged get a kiss on the bare butt from the judge. They would also hold their check if the court date happened to land on welfare Wednesday.

Back on topic the area i usually clean on cleanup days is the area in question, will be nice if they close it to vehicles. That will keep most of the garbage dumpers out, plus the walk to fish it is good for the health. Look how physically healthy Chris is, now if he would just quit wearing that hat with that funny crest on it i am sure his mental health would improve greatly. ;D ;D
