STS Guiding Service December 2007 Special Announcement
« on: December 04, 2007, 12:13:08 AM »

A Quick Look at 2007

The Staff at STS Guiding Service would like to thank everyone who fished with us this past season and wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas. Although we had some challenges with water conditions and lower than expected salmon returns, we did have another successful season with lots of trophy fish being caught.

Our largest sturgeon caught & released this past season was caught by Lynn Hall of California. This fish measured 10 ft 11 inches to the fork weighing over 800lbs. We did have several other large sturgeon caught by clients, a 9 ft 1 inch by Ross Nursey of UK and a 9 ft 4 inch caught by STS Guide Ryan Forester.

Our salmon season was well under expectations. Our best fishing was once the Pink Salmon showed up and those Harrison Chinook provided guests with some great action for 20 to 40 lb Chinook. We are still targeting some Chum and Coho but the salmon season is quickly coming to an end.

Winter Trout Fishing Opportunities

The Fraser Valley offers some excellent winter fishing opportunities. There are several smaller streams that contain good populations of Dolly Varden, Rainbow and Cutthroat Trout. These streams are hard to reach but well worth the effort. The larger rivers like the Harrison and Fraser both offer winter Cutthroat fishing and some winter salmon fishing opportunities. These are good fisheries that offer a good chance at hooking up on a few fish on a days outing.

Our remote fishing adventures are unique for the Fraser Valley area. We have access to several remote areas within the Vancouver, Coast and Mountains Region. Our Jet Boats can reach some of the more hard to reach areas that offer higher quality angling opportunities.

Extraordinary Fly Fishing for Sea Run Bull Trout

BOOK NOW FOR JUNE 2008

45 minutes from Vancouver is one of British Columbia's best-kept secrets. The Upper Pitt River is located at the north end of Pitt Lake, North America's only freshwater tidal lake. Each spring the Upper Pitt River receives thousands of Sea-run Bull trout heading back to their home waters in Garibaldi Park to spawn. Each high tide brings a fresh run of fish into the lower reaches of the Upper Pitt River. We begin targeting this bright chrome fish in mid May with fantastic fishing opportunities through June until mid to late July. Some of the best fishing occurs between May 21 to Jun 31. These fish reach as much as 14 lbs with an average size of 4 to 8 lbs. incredible action on the fly and light spinning tackle. We are now booking for our May - June 2008 Sea-run Bull Trout Fishery. This trip is limited to 2 boats per day so book now for best dates.

Steelhead

Steelhead fishing begins as early as December but the good fishing doesn't get started until mid to late January. All of our local rivers are easy access walk and wade rivers where you can drive close to the river and walk the shores in search of those elusive fish. We also have two rivers that are more remote that are Jet Boat access only for those who prefer to get away off the beaten track.

Most of our early steelhead fishing is gear fishing, water temperatures are still quite cold for swinging fly's so we mainly fish for steelhead casting spoons or float fishing with bait. Once water temperatures begin to warm in late February early March, the fishing becomes much better for fly's and gear for that matter. If your wanting to fly fish for Steelhead, March, April and early May are best.

For those of you who are new to Steelhead fishing or are just wanting to improve your hook up ratio, we offer a 3-day steelhead seminar that has proven year after year that it never hurts to learn a few tricks from the local guides who fish for a living. See our steelhead seminar page for more information.

Sturgeon

Sturgeon fishing is a year round fishery here in the Fraser Valley. Mission is Sturgeon Capital of the World for good reason. During the last 9 years there has been a population study going on here on the Fraser River. More fish have been caught and Tagged in Mission than any other single area on the Fraser River. Not only that, most of the larger fish caught on the Fraser have been caught in Missions Hatzic Flats area which is famous for larger fish.

Although Late Summer and Fall is probably the very best time to fish for large sturgeon, late Winter and early Spring also offers some great fishing. The smelt or Eulichons as they are called enter the Fraser River to spawn. These are small bait fish that are 4 to 8 inches in length. Sturgeon feed on them heavily and become very aggressive once they key in on this bait. Late February all the way through until late May is very good for Sturgeon. Although fish are not as large as in the summer/fall, action can be just as furious. Take advantage of our spring rates.

Fraser Canyon Jet Boat Tours & Trophy Sturgeon

This past Summer /Fall we spent much of our time fishing and exploring new area’s of the Fraser River. The Fraser Canyon is one of these areas that very few people get a chance to see in their lifetime. Hells Gate Park is a popular tourist destination where you can take the gondola down the canyon into the heart of the feared and famous Hells Gate Rapids. STS Guiding is the only guiding company in the region who jet boats through the canyon and puts you at the bottom of Hells Gate. With over 60 trips into the canyon this past summer, we are excited and looking forward to 2008. If incredible scenery & fishing is part of your goal, let us show you the Fraser Canyon. Oh and by the way, 3 of our largest sturgeon this past year were caught while fishing the Fraser Canyon.

ATV Quad Tours

For the 2008 spring season we will be once again offering our ATV / Quad Tours. Come join us for a fun and exciting day exploring the Harrison Hot Springs, Coquihala and Merritt area. We offer daily Quad Tours ranging from 4 hours to a full day of riding. Our guided tours are easy riding exploring old deactivated logging roads where we often see Moose, Deer and the occasional Black Bear. A lakeside shore lunch is provided on all 6 and 8 hour rides.
