headed up to the thompson for some steelies this last weekend.

overall summary: cold (-6 - -12), slow and bad driving conditions

first time in years i have been skunked taking a group up to the thompson.

no steelies but about 8 trout ranging from 2-6 lbs, a couple of northern pike minnows and a very large 5+lb large scale sucker.

pictures to follow when i have time to download pics.

although the fishing wasn't what we hoped for, its still great to be out on the river.

the fish counter dude said that the fishing was really slow on saturday with not a lot of fish landed but then again it seemed like there might have been a total of four groups on the river between shaw springs and martel.

oh well, i will be heading up again for a day trip. can't be skunked on the thompson!

which group was yours FB? were you with those 3 other fellows, or were you the 2 asian guys? myself and 3 more young guys were in a group, you probably saw us...

nah too cold i think, just a ton of whitefish and some trout. missed a good hit when i was sleeping did you drive home sunday? it was fun....NOT

drove home sunday. driving in that stuff is part of the wintersteelheading experience.

that was probably the first time our group has been skunked in a very long time. however, talking to other buddies, they have claimed the fishing has been very slow this year up on the thompson.

my theory...no big horn sheep around = no steelhead.

Just a quick heads up for everybody. Its ok to take pictures of fish up on the rocks when you are retaining them, as seen with this prime sucker. However, any fish you plan on releasing should be kept in the water.

You're right about that...but those are the toughest fish I've come across.  I remember one day being down river from a guy and he caught one of those ugly buggers and he left it on shore to die.  We came back to the run about 2 hrs. later and I put the fish back in the water figuring it would be nutrients for the river and darned if he thing didn't revive all on it's own and swim away.

Oops just it looked like it was bonked, the eye position, and the fact that it's on the ground which it probably froze to the second it touched the cold rocks.

It is not legal to kill a fish that you do not intend to eat. No one should kill a fish simply because it is ugly and has no nutritional, financial or sporting importance to the angler. Minnow species such as largescaled sucker are infact amazing products of post-glacial evolution. They do play an important role in our stream ecosystem. If you intend to release a fish, it is best to keep it in the water at all time.

This is not a suggestion that any of the posters in this thread has broken a regulation, but simply a reminder so we are not harming by-catches unnecessarily.
