Fishing shrimp for steelies
« on: December 28, 2007, 11:33:55 AM »

Quick question for steelheaders. I used cooked shrimp from a friend the last few days and did well. I was wondering if raw shrimp is better or even prawns? I have access to lots and i would think raw would stay on better. thanks

I haven't bait fished in years, but when I did I found that the hand peeled shrimp worked much better than the Machine peeled. Also found that the raw worked better but the raw do come off the hook faster than the cooked as they are softer.

I Highly recommend that you use raw hand peeled shrimp over the machine peeled or cooked ones.

i use shrimp or prawns but i don't cook them i use them raw, cover them in pickling salt aka coarse salt which will dry them out and toughening them up abit so they will last alot longer also you can dye them to give them alittle more colour. I hope this helps you.

I've used both cooked and uncooked shrimps and haven't really noticed any difference.

I just pro cure raw shrimp or prawn tails. Have taken my share of steelhead with them.

The good part is they last on the hook very well. ;D

I do the same as chris. If you dry them out long enough and put a decent amount of salt on them they will last long periods of time!...And the fish love em!

Stain em up (raw prawns) in pro cure and then roll'em in pickling or sea salt and you are set, the salt really increases their durability.

I bought two shrimp rings this evening at Save On about 50 to a ring. Where on sale and got the two packages for a grand total $4.20. ;D ;D Got them in pro-cure now.

Depends on the amount of shrimps and the colour you want. I usually just leave it for 10-15 minutes.
