Way to go. That is a super nice fish for your first hatchery ever. What a great way to recover from the flu! ;)

A river is never quite silent; it can never, of its very nature, be quite still; it is never quite the same from one day to the next. It has its own life and its own beauty, and the creatures it nourishes are alive and beautiful also. Perhaps fishing is only an excuse to be near rivers. - Haig-Brown

maybe its just maturity, and i am sure things will change as people get older.

To some degree, maturity/age plays a role in this. There are retired anglers who have caught enough fish and do not really care about disclosing their spots and techniques, while there are also some intense retired anglers who guard their knowledge tightly. When it comes to the fishing location, it has more to do with respect. For example, knowing that Every Day has worked hard to finally catch a fish (based on his previous posts about his unsuccessful trips), I would not ask where he was fishing both publicly and privately. Nor do I expect him to tell because why give up something he has worked so hard for to those who he doesn't even know personally? What may not be important to you, is quite the opposite to some others.

When it comes to fishing techniques, you will find that most participants on discussion forums do not have a problem with sharing such information.

fair enough, i think it is sad that people feel they have to keep secrets, everybody has received tips and hints from other people, i just have to laugh when people feel they have to guard "their" spot.  i love fishing like the rest, maybe its just maturity, and i am sure things will change as people get older. peace

A big part of steelhead fishing is knowing locations. Knowing what types of water will hold fish in certain conditions. The old adage is that if you see a fish caught somewhere, chances are that more fish will hold there in similar conditions. So for someone who is relatively new, they might not know too many types of areas that will hold fish and will be inclined to return to where they have had previous success. I doubt they would want to have hoards of other people pounding one of the few spots they can confidently fish.

Yea you guys misunderstood. The whole point that I don't want to say where I was is because as soon as someone finds out a fish was caught (especially on a popular internet site) it seems other anglers are like a bunch of vultures, they all move in in swarms. Im pretty sure the other 4 guys that fish there regularally with me would not appreciate it getting crowded and one other thing. I didn't disclose because I love being by myself, I go out to relax. Normally when other people move in I move somewhere else because to me I don't care if I catch fish it's just being out is why I do it. Hopefully you guys will understand now ^^.

i totally agree with you everyday, there's nothing wrong with keeping your spot to yourself. There are no secret spots on the Vedder as far as places to fish, but, there are secret spots where we find the fish have been holding recently. Hardly anyone has been fishing at the crossing bridge, but if I posted a picture of a 15lb doe with the bridge in the background there would be a crowd there tomorrow. I enjoyed the story and your enthusiasm, get some more now!

That's exactly my point, recongnizable land/water/landmarks in a photo are not a good thing and then if you tell where you caught the fish, since I havnt heard of very many recently, that place would be swarmed out the very next day, and thanks for the encouragment, I keep going out every possible chance I get (even though that meant going out in the pouring rain today to get skunked and watch them jump in front of me).

my opinion has nothing to do with everyday himself, its just the whole idea of keeping secrets, if someone doesnt want to disclose info, thats there own perogative but i have to laugh when people make a point of saying that they have a "secret" spot. the vedder is a large river and the chances of fish being in the same spot  as the last time one was caught is the same as anywhere  else in the river. lets all drop this bs and get to talking steelies....
hey everyday, where did you catch your fish....haha

The seasoned rods will tell you that in a day they may bomb hundreds of casts to very tempting waters, only to result in one or two hook ups, often skunked. That is why we don't see Chris and his fish photo every day.  ;D There is no one spot which stays hot all the time. The Canal section was great when the water was really low and fish were bottled up there, but when the water rises, there are other better spots to fish then the lower big runs.

There are not many secret spots in lower river, because most runs are very accessible to the throngs of fishermen. That is why every body tries to beat every one to the spot by being there at first light. The mid and upper sections have more so called 'secret' spots. Not truly all that secret, just fewer people know how to access them. Some of these hot spots are resting pockets among fast waters and they can be a small spot. You can hook a steelie holding there usually within 3 casts. So when some one fishes it right before you, you have lost your chance to a fish holding there. You cannot say the same in some of the lower river runs. They are either too large, too long, or fish are more likely to be off bite due to too many things thrown at them and they can be more selective. How often we see a guy pick up a fish right after other people just fish the area? Too often.

This makes it not so big a deal to reveal where you hook a fish in the lower run. Another thing is that the lower runs may turn hot one day and dead cold the next. It all depends on where the main push of fish overnight happen to sit in the morning. So one morning, Lickman can yield 10 fish, and cold the next, while Train Bridge for example can turn on hot because the fish happen to stop there in stead of Lickman or other runs. Ultimately, steelheading is about luck on any given day, although skill and adapting to changing river conditon can turn luck into your favour often. My 2 cents on the subject.
