Boat Launch for Vedder Mouth
« on: March 24, 2008, 08:58:38 PM »

Evening lds,

Can someonedirect me to a launch closest to the Vedder.

Buddy of mine has a nice 16' and is looking to go after some Cutthroat Trout, I was thinking the Vedder mouth would be good.

Any other ideas?

Thanx.
Jim.

Barrowtown Pumping Station. Follow North Parallel Road East of Number 3 Road.

Do not leave anything of value in vehicle as vandalism can be bad at times.

Thanks ... its a jet... any general advice on where to go?

What set up would work best, bait  or spoons?

While I am at it, I know its early but how about when using a Bar rig set up for Springs in a couple of months...  Where should we go?

Thanks.

It looked pretty shallow from the freeway last weekend, but a jet might get you through the skinny water were the sumas and vedder meet (probably the most shallow part). Also you could try the Nicomen Slough which is a concrete launch and is about a 5 minute ride to the mouth of the vedder. As far as gear..I am sure your standard croc's would work. You could also try the mouth of the Harrison which is not a long boat ride up river.

Use an anchor winch to get through that part. ;D

It looks pretty shallow from the highway last weekend, but there is still enough water  to get through most of the productive spots.

I launched at the pump station saturday. It was pretty low at the confluence of the canal and the sumas but its a short stretch of about 6"of water. I had no problem with a jet. With a prop I would float it through the confluence...bring waders! There are some deadheads in the sumas stretch and old piling so watch out. It narrows again going into the Fraser but there is a deeper channel on the East side. If you want to avoid the Sumas you could launch at Old Orchard (if the gate is open?) and it's only a quick trip down river to the mouth.

Old Orchard Road is closed for now and should be opened in May.

If you watch the tides in The Vedder Sumas it will make your trip easier.

Has anybody noticed how the confluence of the sumas and vedder look recently? Thinking of launching at the Barrowtown pump station this weekend. Or does anybody know if old orchard is open?

Thanks

Old Orchard is still closed but we have had an agreement with the City of Chilliwack to open it when the salmon fishery opens. I will shoot them a email an ask them if they will open it once the Fraser comes up a bit and covers the sand bar as this is the problem as the residents raise cane about the garbage dumping, burnt cars, parties and noise from off road vehicles.

Re launching at Barrowtown, remarks on the above posts are still valid.

I just heard from the City of Chilliwack this morning and as the gravel bar at Old Orchard is now covered they will be opening the launch at Old Orchard by early next week. It should remain open to sometimes in September.

Old Orchard Boat launch now open. The Fraser River is very high and the water is right up to the gate.
Will make for easy launching if anyone wants to use it. ;D

Still open, Nick and I had a meeting with the City a few weeks ago and it should remain open until the end of the month if there is no garbage dumping or to much noise from ATV's etc. that will cause for complaints from residents. We also are looking at trying to get a permant launch in that area. The City is providing us with contacts with 2 land owners, Cattermoles and the Cement people for us to chech with, in a few weeks.
