Catch and Release and Respect for Fish
« on: May 08, 2008, 09:51:37 PM »

??? As one of your older members it quite a lot to get my dander up . Recently while watching a series of those "back East" fishing shows I got angry . These "Celebrity Fishing Hosts" repeat ad nausum how they Respect their fish .  ??? After a hook set that the fisher uses all his body coupled with jerking motion with his arms that a weight lifter would admire the fish is then reeled to the boot with a sweeping motion and upward pressure of the rod to enhance the "Fight" for the cameras .  Then they expound on their catch and release practice while their grip on the fish is such as to hold it while the pliers go into the mouth and one readily notes the jerking and twisting forces that go on to remove up to two large triple barbed hooks . Then comes the camera time which not all but some push to the limit. So much for "respect" Sorry for my Rant ...

I completely understand what you mean. Some celebrity anglers sometimes snag their fish and after rehook them in the mouth and throw them back into the water to show that the fish took it. I also agree about some hosts hold the fish out of the water for too long.

10% of the good fishmen will catch 90% of the fishes.
2% of the VERY good fishmen will catch and release 500% of the fishes.

36.5% of the time, people just make up percentages and statistics.

72.4% of the time, people agree and repeat the statistics to others.

on the ocean, i like to use a single barbless hook. i like this method because it is easier to release the fish unharmed. many rock cod too small are released this way. now that there are rock cod conservation areas, it is very important that in other areas we practice better fishing methods if we want rock cod to replenish.
