Sand build up in lower fraser
« on: May 11, 2008, 01:03:30 PM »

Was out launching at brownsville and the entire dock was on ground and there was a sand bar beside the last pier.
If the Gov was so concern about flooding that they had to remove gravel at spring Bar wouldn't it be a better choice to remove the sand below as well. I have never seen this much sand build up even at low tide. Had to wait 2 hours for the tide to come back up to get out.

I presume there is not enough money in the sand.

I noticed the same thing at the marina near Graybar road in East Richmond. I've been walking near there for years, and this year some of the boats moored nearest the dyke have actually been on sand at the low tides. Never saw that in previous years. I assume that its overdue for dredging.

The Fraser main shipping channels are dredged, which is funded by the Federal Government. The funding for dredging back channels etc was stopped several years ago, which results in the silt build-up that you are seeing now. There was a story on Global BC on this earlier last week.

It looked like some unusualy low tides the last few days :-\. Even the Nicomackle (sp) was really low and they don't usualy dredge it.

I thought that because they dredged so much gravel it lowered the water level too much  :D

I was wondering why off the New West Key you could walk out about 30 m. regardless of the tide.  It is really quite something to see.
