Best SUV tire
« on: July 05, 2008, 08:09:08 PM »

my '05 Explorer is needin new boots and I'm looking for some advice.  Which tire is best for my use?

I do launch an 18' aluminum boat at I-22 numerous times a year.  Drive out on sand at Peg once or twice a year, and launch a couple of times from the "ramp" near Water Ave in Hope.  About 80% of my driving is Hwy 1 in Lower Mainland, and the rest is city type driving.  I'm ideally looking for something that's quiet on the highway but with give me traction in the sand and gravel.

What brand & type do y'all suggest?

I use Pirelli Scorpion for my Expedition.  Good traction and still provides smooth ride.

I use the toyo open country on my taco.  F'ing awesome tire.  In mud and deep snow they have been superb, i only have to turn around when im pushing snow with the bumper.  I've had 4x4s on and off for 15 years and these are the best tires ive owned by a long shot.   Two good friends also have these tires and love them as well.  On the road they are quiet too, excellent tread life also...

Highly recommend them!!

If you are towing a boat or trailer make sure you get the truck tire and not passenger tire, regardless of what brand you go with...Most come in both as suv's cater to the city crowd and don't necessarily require the strength of a truck tire.  If you don't need to tow or carry lots of weight, the tread should be the same and the passenger ones are a little quieter.
