Whats splashing in deer lake?
« on: July 13, 2008, 10:39:54 AM »

I was out fishing for carp on Deer lake the other night  - so far I have had no success catching them but that's another story.

Anyway, as dusk approached I could see ripples on the surface, I assume from something finning about just below, and every now and then there would be a big splash.  This guy and I had a disagreement as to what it was - he was convinced they were trout but I am thinking the splashes were simply too big to be trout.   I know the lake gets stocked with trout but the splashes must have been from a fish of at least 4 pounds or so - do the trout get that big in there?

(Note: They were definitely fish, not ducks or beavers - we looked very hard :))

There are some big carp in deer lake.  Go a little heavier in your setup if you hope to land one, braided line helps cause of the heavy vegetation.

I have it on good authority that there are some lunker Trout in that lake. You will never know if you heard trout or carp until you catch one. LOL!

carp will roll all day, not just at night.  It sounds to me like it's either large trout on an evening hatch or beaver.

hmmmm I have heard carp moving many times after dark, especially if they are in bullrushes....you can hear them splashing around, moving the reeds, and you can't see a thing...

I think these answers confirm my suspicions .

I haven't had a great deal of experience fishing for Carp in Canada but a carp setup is typically flavored dough or bread on the bottom or suspended just off the bottom with a float.

I tried for them that night with a bottom rig but I ran into a lot of problems with weed on the bottom - I think a float would work better there.   There appeared to be fish finning near the surface so, who knows, a piece of bread floating on the surface may even yield something if you were to try just before dusk - it would be a very exciting way to hook into one.

I have heard of guys picking them up on dry flies so I don't think there is any reason a piece of bread on the surface wouldn't work as long as it was small enough.  I know the guys getting them on flies were using very small sizes.  Not sure if that behavior is really feeding behavior though, I have my doubts.
