How do you like to tie and rig roe bags?
« on: September 01, 2008, 09:52:54 AM »

I've never really fished roe before... only wool and spoons.

1. How does a fellow go about tying and rigging roe bags?
2. Can you tie a roe bag with roe skein rather than single eggs?  Actually I don't see why you couldn't, but perhaps the better question is why WOULDN'T you?
3. Does tying a roe bag decrease it's effectiveness from being a loose gob of roe on your hook?  Or is the small decrease in effectiveness offset by the longer lasting nature of the roe bag?
4. Finally, how do you hook on a roe bag?  I'm *guessing* that you slip the hook into the knot, slide the bag up the hook shank, and wrap your bait loop around the knot before cinching tight...

Thoughts?  Thanks!
:D

Hi Tex, I've used roe bags quite often and usually during steelie season and have only used single eggs twice. Most often I will just use my pro-cured roe and slice off a piece and use spider wire to tie it up nicely. Once I have ten or so I will shake them up inside a bag with borax to give them that milky effect once they hit the water. You are correct in saying that the longer lasting nature of the
roe bag offsets any losses that accounts for using just roe. I use double red hot pro-cure and red mesh which dance together nicely in questionable water conditions and clarity and so far the steelies always accept my hand when asked to dance. I just put the hook thru the bag and then wrap my roe knot around the bag. Adjustments will be neccessary as you fish to ensure good presentation throughout the day. Good Luck. :)

If you are just getting started I think roe bags are best. Maybe use a bit of wool with it to.

At times straight roe (not in bags) will work better. But its not that much better, and more hassle. I tend to fish bags, but if I "know" the fish are in front of me, and not biting, then I may try some roe without a bag.

I have a Baitmaker and while it does work, I now use a Spawnee. As to rigging, just hook the roe bag under the knot and let it hang from the hook's throat.

Its very interesting to learn of these roe bag machines like the baitmaker and the spawnee because I've always just used my little ole hands to tie them on. I'll have to give them a peek and see how dependable they are as tying them can be a pain sometimes and anything that makes the job easier helps. Thanks guys.

Great thoughts, thanks for the suggestions everyone.  I think I'll be giving this a shot come mid-September when I hit the flow.  Not sure how hard it will be to tie up the roe bags, but I think I'd get laughed out of the apt by my fiance if I came home with a machine to help me tie the sacks up.  LOL  I guess I'll find out in a few weeks!

I use the Spawnee tying machine and love it.
It's fast and clean and sturdy once you mount it to a cutting board.
You can tie anything from single eggs to roe to shrimp if you like.
Experiment with the colours, but stay away from the non stretchy stuff as it is harder to work with.
You can slide the hook just under the knot or use a bait loop if you like..
Either way will work.
Tie different sizes to experiment with and to adjust to the water conditions.
Water hardened singles are my preference though.

I start with some curred single chum eggs (usually pink or red) and then tie 4 or 5 eggs into a sack and I use 20lb line to make a knot to tie the bag closed, when I trim the extra line I leave about 1/4 inch of line sticking out and that is what I wrap my bait loop aroun to sinch it to the hook

Hi Tex,

I find that cured roe works a lot better than roe bags -- if it's cured well, you will have no trouble getting it to stay on the hook. Also, I find that roe is the most effective for the first few casts (until a lot of the scent gets washed away) so another bad thing about roe bags is that since they stay on the hook forever, you will tend to not change them very often.

BTW thanks for that spinner last year, I managed to get 2 coho with it   ;D

Right on dspot!  Glad to hear you managed to hook a couple.  Youre doing better than I, in that case.  lol  Where/when did I meet you last year on the Vedder?  (I gave away some gear to a few nice people last season).

I think it was mid river (the spot is right beside a fence holding off some goats/llamas). We got a whole bunch of jacks and maybe a chum or 2 that day if I recall correctly.
