 fished the vedder for the second time this fall. Started fishing  mid river about 8am.  first 15min I rolled one coho  then shortly after a solid hit and fish on, made a couple of jumps and then into the typical coho roll. usually coho seem to roll right out of this mess. but this fish is now coming in sideways, the hook has come out of her mouth no longer in the fish but has hooked the line wrapped around her, she is basicaly tied up. to the four fishermen on the other side its  a snagged fish. pull  this chrome  hatchery coho about 8lbs into the shallows reach down slip the hook of the line she rolls out  and is gone. I did this because Im on the river to enjoy a beautiful fall day fishing not looking for any hassle from other fishermen. would you consider this fish legal?  hit three more fish that I saw that were coho none to shore.  Last week I kept one coho that was approx. 12lbs and lost two others that were close to the same size. some big fish around. on the negative side walked into some runs and its like people bring their garbage with them and scatter it on the beach. I didnt have a garbage bag with me. but if chris was there he would of paid for his Tims for the rest of the week with beer and pop cans. A friend was fishing below the prison and found a dead otter wrapped in fishing line floating off the end of a snag. whats so hard about taking your garbage home.

Nope, I would be letting it go... but like you said, the most important part is to get out and have a nice day..  Keep up the good work dude!

I probably would have bonked it.... If you know for sure it is (or was) in the mouth and still land it then it is a legal fish. Pretty much the same thing if you hook a float attatched to a fish (other hook in it's mouth) would you consider it legal... you didnt hook it in the mouth technically, but you hooked another rigging that is in the mouth. I too have landed a coho where it wrapped itself in my line after snapping the hook off, it ended up being a wild fish but if hatchery I would have killed it b.c my hook was still in the mouth   

Probably better to be safe than sorry, especially if other fisherman were telling you to let it go, you dont want to get a fine, that would really ruin your day.

Better safe than sorry - I think you did the right thing... plus you didn't have the worry of "should I have let it go?" over your head for the rest of the day.  Good for you!

That said, I'm always impressed when guys can lasso fish - well done cowboy!

The garbage issue will be with us for a long time until responsible anglers cleanup their mess or others clean it up for them. The volunteers at the CVRCC BC River's Day brought 4,234 pounds to the dumpsters so you see their is a lot of people, anglers and others out there that do not give a darn about our rivers and the environment.

I hope everyone that reads this takes a garbage bag out while fishing this Thanksgiving weekend and cleans up the area they are in, I will be interested in hearing who does.

Are you sure it wasn't a mink... there are a ton of them along the river    Possibly a beaver even    The only otters I have EVER seen were in the Peach creek like 4 years ago, other than that they have all been mink (look very similar to an otter, but are quite small).

Probably a beaver, there are a lot of them in this driftwood bonanza.

I spotted a good size otter in upper river about 5 years ago.

The last two year there has been a family by the Freeway Bridge.

Also big pieces of roe are a waste of this precious bait.  All you need is a piece the size of a quarter.

What would i have done?? Depends on the situation, if the fish for sure hooked in the mouth and just twisted up the line, i would keep it even the hook poped out ... But do i really care about keeping the fish. NO.    As far as legal issuse goes, i belive it is legal to keep the fish as long as its not snagged.

i don't think so, those thing do more harm then good in the river system.. spawing salmon, salmon smolt, steelhead smolt, they eat them all... There should be some sort of otter control to keep them out of the river system. To all those water fowl hunters out there!!!
