One time a fellow angler told me it is a good idea to leave your motor in the unlocked position so if you hit something the impact will be dampened but I also read from another source that today's motor are designed to do this in the locked position anyways.  Any advice?

Don't know about newer ones, but both the Merc's I've had were always unlocked when in forward gear. The thrust keeps them down until they hit something (and it happened on both) then they kick up. When in reverse, the locks engaged to keep them down.
