Saturday A.M. Squamish area rivers fishable but no fish.

Chum should be closed ASAP in my opinion. Very few around for late October. Just had high water so they should of been pushing into the rivers big time but there just not there. If you want meat to kill, go to the Vedder and leave Squamish chum in the river to spawn where there needed.

I agree... when we retain just because its our right under the limit it affects all of our futures on these rivers.... I live by the Seymour and although it allows for 1 hatchery coho I have never retained a fish there.... they will close these rivers entirely if we dont use some discretion ourselves sometimes!

It's like a ghost town out there unless you know where to look!  I was quite disapponited with the lack of numbers..  It should be plugged full of fish right now and it's not!

well if there are not many Chum in the Squish but tons in the Fraser,  Stave and Ved then the spillage must still have an effect on returns
I say shut it down for now and let the straglers spawn in peace
If there is a late run it can allways be re-opened

can't agree more.   
i remember back in 06 there were tons of chums there, i would hook into over 10 fish in a single afternoon for 3 straight days.  then in 07 the returning number was down sharply, i couldn't hook into a single fish in two outings.  It seems like the same case this year....We definitely need to do our part to save it.

Are the local SFAC and DFO having a discussion up there soon to get it closed? When can we expect a notice to be out? Hope to see it soon.

why does dfo need people to tell them this info before they act? shouldnt they be on top of this?is it not part of their job?

They are keeping a tab on it.  Just giving it reasonable delay.  Once passed if condition doesn't improve it will be shutdown.

Just wanted to give my 2 cents as well...
I know that people have been catching cohos on the Squamish over the last days, especially on the far shore. I saw a few chum caught at Fisherman's Park on Saturday.
I did not catch anything except a nice dolly although I spent 5 hours at various spots.
Talked again to a bunch of people along the river(s) - Squish, Cheak, Mamquam. Still not very many chum, especially compared to 2006 where it was impossible not to catch a chum.
DFO is apparently thinking about closure again on the chum which is the right thing to do at this point.  Someone I know knows someone kinda rumour... don't take my word for it.
I decided to quit for now unless they come in numbers. I agree with what has been said by several guys in this thread. Apparently, there are "meat-fishing rivers" - the Squish system is not one of them (anymore).
I tried my favorite spot on the Cheak again yesterday with probably 10 other guys. There were fish around but I saw only one chum caught in 2 hours.
I think, I will enjoy the chum in the little creek by our house watching them up closewhen they come up and spawn....

Hey guys: I am glad to hear the DFO are monitoring the situation and will access conditions. IF they close the system, there is not much chance they will reopen. They closed the season last year and then the late run came in and there were a lot chum around. We had the second biggest pink return in years in the Squamish system last year and they also closed that fishery. I agree, if returns are down, action must be taken. But let us let the DFO do their job.

I fished the Squamish last year and this year at the mouth of the Mamquam. Usually a hot spot. Not this year. The fish are comming up the far side and we can not get to them. The seals are feeding well and the guys in boats are doing well. If you fish from shore, it is tough to get to the fish in a lot of zones that used to be very hot. Rivers change.

Doesn't help that the water is still really dirty and there are a sheeit load of seals as well..I agree with all others..time to shut her down like she deserves...

Fished a spot both days of the weekend and I will say yesterday afternoon there was a ton of fish move into the run we were fishing which was a step in the right direction but might be to little too late. The mouth of the mamquam has changed since 2006 forcing fish to the outside, that being said I fished the Mamquam in clear conditions in the morning yesterday and there were not alot of fish moving up. Not sure if the fish find a spot to difficult to get into whether they would just shift and go somewhere else (upriver)? Again the run we were at yesterday we were also at Saturday and it was like night and day with the amount of fish that had moved in. All really fresh, hope to hell they are just late but I kind of doubt it.
