as promised my brother and I took our 87 yr old dad fishing to the slough this morning. I told him that we would pick him up at 9am. we arrived about 15min early and he was sitting there with his coat on and thermos of tea in hand. left maple ridge without a hint of wind. arrived at the boat launch to see white caps on the fraser and a very low tide for launching the boat. with my brothers aid we launched the boat and loaded dad in. unfortunatly dad broke his back about a year ago, at his age the doctors say there is nothing to be done except pain control. but the old boy has always been a gamer and would never turn down a fishing trip. should of checked the tide charts before we left as it must of been a minus tide, the water level never changed in the three hours that we fished. the slough has silted in so much in the last few years that with the low tide there was only one area on the lower end that had any kind of holding water. and thats the area that about 25 fishermen tried to fish. the weather was so nice and dad was just happy to be out that we gave it a go and as expected never had abite. it was nice to see garibaldi high schools fishing club out for the morning, both boys and girls out chucking flies from their bellyboats. if you plan to fish the slough on a low tide and there isnt any wind its better to troll out in the fraser as the coho stack up waiting for the tide change. after w.w. 1 my grandfather homsteaded in maple ridge on 240th north, his property was the site of the private school. dad has spent most of his life fishing the alouette river. in the thirties they fished with what they called gut line, if you planned on fishing the next day you would strip this line of your reel, soak it in a barrel of water and then reel it back on. no one talked about conservation back then, dad said the limit at that time was three steelhead a day and thats what you usualy went home with how times have changed. the vedder should be good for a couple of more weeks so might make a trip on sat. with my son. good luck
