Chilliwack River, January 3rd 2009: Got lucky today...
« on: January 03, 2009, 11:59:12 AM »

I braved the weather this morning and drove to the Vedder for the first time this year. I have not fish for more than a month now and was hoping to get into some actions.
Snow started to drift and the car's thermometer read -3 when I arrived at the lower end of the Vedder.

I quickly tie up when I reached the river's edge and made a few casts. On my 6th casts and barely 2 feet of water, my float took a quick dip. I quickly set my rod back and sure enough I felt the head shake of a fish.
With the water being so cold, the fight only took about 5 to 10 minutes the most. I realized that it was indeed a hatchery buck of about 10lbs and the weather being so cold, I decided to retain it.

headed out again this afternoon in search of steelhead. There were not many guys on the river at all which was sweet, the solitude of being out by yourself on a snowy day is hard to beat. I fished Lickman area and was very surprised to see how the river has changed in some spots up river from the parking lot. Anyways, no action with none to be seen so I headed up river to try my luck. Fished for another hour or so with nothing to show for it, and was about to head in as it was getting very cold, when I felt a tug and set the hook. My heart was going like crazy hoping to see that flash of chrome, two minutes later I had landed the first of three coho. The first two I got pics of and the last one slithered away before I could get the shot, two hatcheries and one wild. It was nice to end the day with a little bit of excitement.
