This derby was and is a great idea that rick started 3 years ago but in the grand scheme of things the amount of money that will be raised is barely going to make a difference to the projects that need to be done to the river or to steelhead for that matter, while i know every penny adds up but i think rick has made a good choice where the funds should go and by donating the amount of money that will be raised to this cause it will make a significant difference and keep the cam up and running, remember this cam is in its infant  stage and if it survives long enough some of the glitches I'm sure can be worked out to benefit all who use the river or just want to learn about it and the Eco system around it.I think for those that don't like their privacy compromised stay away from the area ,its a big river ,fish somewhere else or if you do decide to be in the area just don't do anything illegal and keep your pants on and everything should be OK :)

Randy from hatch matchers has once again come up with a great prize for this derby. He has given me a fishing vest from West coast outdoor supplies. It is the totem vest and is an XL.

Ok, Finalization has been done for the fly side of the derby...We're looking at only one or two prizes..The main prize will be a nice one...if other prizes are donated we will transfer them over to the regular derby..

I really like the idea of the money going to the cam as well...I know Rick is meeting up to have lunch tomorrow with her and think that's great!!!

Now for the rules for the fly side..

Prize for largerst fish!!! That's pretty much it!!! Something nice and fly related so you gear guys don't get a knot in your heinies..

Rules are as follows...

Largest fish on scale OR Largest fish C & R' d Wins...

If you choose to fish this way ( C & R) you need to make sure you have your own measuring tape with you (not provided) you'll have to take clear pictures with length and width etc. and in the picture you HAVE TO SHOW your 2009 derby ticket that you'll receive on the day of the derby!!! Pretty easy stuff!!
IF by chance we have a scaled fish and a C & R fish and come up with equal weights, The scale fish will be declared the winner!!!
I'm trying to arrange a prize for both and hope to have that in place...but if not this will be how it goes...Many thanks to Micheal and Youngs for their donation on this..so pretty sure their will be two prizes...

If by chance there isn't a fish caught in the fly section, then the prize (s) will go to.......me!!!!

Ok, just kidding.....

I would like to see them go to someone who is just starting out and will actually use it!!! Personally I would like to offer it first in raffle form to the people helping Rick to the set up and cooking etc. who don't get a chance to fish that day and/or to some carpet crawler who'll make his/her gear parents life miserable from that day forward!!!  ;D
I'll work this part out with Rick later..but for now that's how it stands...

I have talked to a few shops and found out the C & R part is important to some guys so that's why  were putting it in on the fly only section....Rick said, some gear guys wanted it too...so if you choose to make sure your using a fly rod as that's the only section this will be allowed in!!!

No whiners!!!!

In the future Rick might add this to the derby as a whole but that's his decision for another year...I bugged the sheeit out of him to allow me to enter it on the fly side and am running that side myself to help out!!!

That's it boys and girls...get out their and support this derby as it's going to a really viable cause this year!!!!

Good morning to all, my first post.
Saturday January 24th I had the privilege and yes honor to meet one amazing man. Rick Lewis. I was also privileged to meet his two fishing buddies, Brian & Jamie. Prior to going down to the river to meet them, I asked if Rick had any objection of myself zooming up on him and his friends as they fished so the children around the world could see them and their equipment. Little did I or them know what we were about to see.
After a number of phone calls with Rick, I explained to Rick that I can in fact through this camera on the river see the fish below the waterline.

No sooner did Rick drop his line in that beautiful river and BAM, fish on. From our side, the camera side, it looked like a whale. E-mails from around the world came swarming in. What kind of fish is that, who is he, do they eat them, what kind of bait do you use, does he feed his village with this fish, and on and on it went. It was all I could do to keep the camera on Rick as I was as shocked and excited to see him nail into that monster right before the camera.
I than had to leave to meet Rick and his friends down at the river, and what do you think happened when I was NOT behind the camera.

The world is seeing all of this. The children in South Africa and other countries who never see such things are just in awe. They can not understand how any of you can fish in the snow, or for that matter, many have never seen snow. The questions they ask just keep coming. Gill & Irene Bouvier who were gracious enough to allow us to place this camera and all the equipment that goes along with it in their home, we THANK YOU.
We here at Kids in the Nest would also like to thank each of you who have been so supportive of what it is we are trying to do with these cameras and the message we are trying to convey around the world.

Charlie it was a pleasure to meet you and your husband and Gill on Saturday. It's too bad no one was behind the camera just after you left, because the kids in Africa could have seem their first fisherman fall into a river. I went in bum first for my first serious soaker of the season! ;)
I love the video by the way!

Oh my gosh, Brian if I had seen that off the camera I swear I would have fallen off my chair in total laughter. That water is COLD, but I don't think you need me to tell you that, giggle giggle.
Here I had just taken those pictures of the soles of your boots to show th kids in Africa, why it was you guys don't slip out there. I'd have had a hard time explaining this one.
I was on the camera all day today, and once again saw a monster swimming on up the river. It hung back behind this rock and would roll like I had seen the salmon do, that you guys catch.
There we're a number of guys out there and I soooooo wish I could have yelled over that camera, to the left, left....go left....LOL.
Oh well, they'll be there for you guys another day, and if I told you where it was, where would the sport be in finding them....:)
I also would like to thank you guys for going out of your way to meet with us. It was a real joy to talk with you all.

I hope you will appreciate the humour in this:
