Chilliwack River Camera May Have To Close
« on: January 15, 2009, 07:08:34 PM »

Had this sent to me today.

Help your community w river monitoring and educated kids around the world by helping Kids In The Nest keep their River Cam: (every little bit helps)

Kids In The Nest Educational Society has set up the River Cam on the Chilliwack/Vedder River(s) and it is a ROARRING SUCCESS!  But there is a problem, it is TOO successful. It is getting millions of hits – which has really increased their broad band costs, not to mention they have been paying separate Internet costs for an extra camera and computer.  Much of it is paid out of pocket, by a couple living on pension, not to mention they put in endless hours work, on this site!  IF YOU CAN AT ALL PLEASE MAKE A DONATION either in person or on their site  (…it will close down w/o our help).

They have applied for a grant that will keep the River Cam going; but even if they are approved, it will take six months to come through.  Meanwhile they need to raise at least $2,000.00 to keep it going while they wait for word on the grant.  Kids in the nest is a registered non-profit society and can give tax receipts. Payments can be made to Pay pal or by mail.  On line donations can be made at this Web Site URL:

http://kidsinthenest.com/Donations.aspx

What would it take to help: 100 people, local societies, businesses, or organizations to faithfully give $20.00 a month for six months; (or a total of $120.00 1x)

Or for 100 people to give a 1x donation of $20.00 or so, please do so if you can – every little bit helps!

WHY should YOU help - because it is a monitoring system for our river and an education for this and future generations and has potential to help pay for work on the river, put computers in our classrooms, educate people so they properly treat, maintain and preserve our natural resources and more! But they have to first get around the initial and maintenance costs while they apply for grants or funding that will help them to continue.  These are volunteers who have gone to a great deal of work and expense to help and educate communities around the world, including ours – let's help them make it happen.

Nop. I just don't think its right to zoom in on fisherman. I also don't think its lawful to put up pictures or videos of people without their consent. I may be wrong though.

If you dont like it dont fish where the camera is. How hard is that? Its a HUGE river. Do you use ATM's? Do you walk into stores? Your always on camera so who cares.........If you look at it the quality is not even that great. Unless you really know the person you could never tell who someone is.

Its NOT an invasion of privacy because you are on PUBLIC land. If your going to say something atleast know what your talking about... ::)

With all due respect, some people don't know where the camera is located.

If there is a concern regarding how the camera is being used, then email info@kidsinthenest.com.

The camera can certainly have practical purposes such as aiding anglers on river condition. Not so sure about the entertaining purpose. watching the camera zooming in and out, going in all directions like a surveillance camera does not interest me that much. Although perfectly legal, as someone who operates both still and video cameras quite regularly, I've learned to be aware and respect others' privacy. Best of luck to the site owner. It is definitely not cheap to operate a site that receives a large traffic volume.

I don't like the idea of not knowing there is a camera zooming in on me. You could be scratching your butt or something and the next thing you know your on youtube. With people making fun of something you thought or would only do out of the public eye. They should have some signs up saying its a videoed area. I'm not admitting to scratching my butt it's just an example. :)

this camera is viewed by people all over the world, it was not put there to give away someones spot. It was put there to show children from africa the changes in our seasons. After seeing the "fisherpersons" eagles, and other wildlife it was a hit. I dont think you should slag someone who spends thier free time educating children in africa.

I will do my part to see this camera stays.

Die Hard:  Who is this friend that the comment was supposedly made to?  I was there on the day of installation when this issue of privacy came up and do not remember the discussion being exactly as you describe it?  This site operator is VERY aware of and respectful to people's privacy and would never put inappropriate material on U-Tube.  Remember it is a site for Kids!  Are you repeating gossip or 2nd or 3rd hand information here?  People have actually asked to be zoomed in on.  Some love it and even waive to the folks back home, and ask be on U tube etc.  It is only on one small part of the river, which is easily avoidable if you are not happy with it.  There are a lot of benefits to the camera.  It was very beneficial in our recent flood and slide situation as we can see what is happening down there.  It is pretty hard to tell who the people are anyhow.  This is the best way to educate kids around the world; they are excited to see our river, our fish, our country, the mountains, snow, the kayakers etc.  This is seen in over 100 countries and they have lots of fishing questions.  It is actually promoting our area.  It also has the ability to raise funds for humanitarian type purposes. All the benefits and enjoyment people are getting FAR outweighs any negatives.  The only downfall is the kids are disappointed that more fishermen are not holding up their fish to show them on the Camera.  The kids in South Africa do not see Steelhead, Salmon or Sturgeon. A U-Tube video of that would be great.  They also love to see the Eagles.  This camera is a total success, educating kids of all ages around the world and we wholeheartedly support it.  So those of you who do not mind being on camera waive to the camera and HOLD UP YOUR FISH SO THE KIDS CAN SEE IT!!
