Chilliwack River, January 18th 2009
« on: January 18, 2009, 04:10:01 PM »

well i finally made it it out for the first time to start my 4th steelhead season. the weather was fantastic, the scenery unbelievable! I started way at the top and worked down river given that the lower part was cloudy. There was a few anglers out but I expected more. maybe the nfl playoffs kept them home. The conditions were near perfect and a lot of water that looked extremely fishy to be had away from crowds. I fished 6 different runs and found them all to be ideal holding water.(although I am no expert) In 2 of the runs my float abruptly sank and i gave her a good jerk back but nothing on. It felt like a fish the way the float sank but nothing on both times.are they that slippery? I was really hoping for my first ever vedder steelhead!( I have only caught a couple steelhead and both on the stamp.) anyhow, i decided to move down river and fished some cloudy water for a while and I met a few very nice gentleman whom I learned a great deal about steelhead fishing from. I of the guys was a spey casting and the other fly fishing. I guess with the higher water the spey caster had more river to fish. Is it just me or are people MUCH nicer during steelhead season? After another 20 min I was done fishing for the day on the walk back to my car I also happen to meet a young lady fly fisher  who was stunningly pretty!great way to end the day  ;). No fish, but a fantastic day all in all!

thanks for the report, glad to hear you got out in the sunshine, I fished Keith Wilson for about an hour. Visibility was terrible, but it was just a last minute thing to get out in sun at the end of the day.

Yesterday i missed the same fish twice like that, before finally having him take it solidly, did u go back over the fish? When this happens, i take 10 steps up, and inch my casts across the drift, covering every inch, and slowly working down

I prefer to just cast in the same spot the float went down personly, a lot less work and usually you hit the fish
I did the same and more. but no taker. i could have snagged something but who knows.

That has happened to me a few times this season. Hard float down and when the hook is set nothing happens. Reel in and prawn or roe is gone, cast in the same area, way up from it, way out from it, and below it and nothing. Have also heard the same from others. In the cases I have hit fish I am not fastt enough and they always seem to come off. Im still at 0 on the season, hoping for better luck this year, BEFORE march hits.

Was wandering around the river from train bridge all the way up past lickman today.  Hit all the fishy spots on the way, no fishy.  Most action I saw all day was when a guy chucking flies played a very convincing snag for about five minutes... I saw a lady flyfisher too, but unfortunately she was with a man flyfisher...

if it was her ,she was taking out a fella that got the high bid at the pacific angler x mass sale (all money goes to the steelhead society of BC).there was a silent auction for a bunch of stuff.a day of fishing with April was 1 prize.

Saturday was the day to be out. 9 fish  got weighed at freds. Sunday 1 fish?
