Barbs
« on: January 31, 2009, 08:48:21 PM »

I noticed that when i pinch barbs sometime the barb breaks and there is a little piece still. I just throw them away but i dont know if thats considered a barb? And is there anyway to avoid this from happening?

thx

there really is no way to avoid that happening and if the barb is fully missing then your fine. On my spey hooks the barb tips always snap off which bugs me also. i cant buy most fly hooks barbless but for gear fishing i always buy barbless (unless they have none).

Just use a needle nose plier and pinch it down hard. Works for me.

use the ridged part  of pliers ( many raised lines used to grab ) to file down rest of broken barb by turning the pliers back and forth to file down the barb splinter. Works fairly good most time but there is the odd big piece that doesn't file down nicely.

people should'nt have to be checked. its up to you to follow the law.

I have found several hooks that are barbed, even a few trebles. Finding a fly that is barbed dosent mean flyfishers are all bad.
I aso found 2 leaders in root balls that were 4-6 feet in length from betty to hook.

why not just save yourself the troubles and buy barbless hooks  :-\ :-\ only time i buy barbed hooks are when they have no barbless left (and i really need hooks) or when im buying fly hooks because you cant get to many of them barbless.
