Chilliwack River, February 16th 2009
« on: February 16, 2009, 08:04:26 PM »

After a slow day yesterday I was wondering if I should go out or not. Text my friend at lunch and we decide to go anyways. Like they always saw, "Shoulda been here yesterday" we were hoping for that day to be today.  8)

Suppose to meet him at 1:30 just above the Crossing - our usual meeting spot. Like always I am a good 20 mins late  ::). We decide on the area and head up there. In 4 trips so far to that general we have no yet been skunked - always have hooked or caught something, hopefully we can keep that streak alive. As we are walking in we run into a guy walking out. We ask if if he's had anything, and to our surprise he has landed 2 wilds  :o. Confidence starts getting high. Beautiful blue skies, nice warm weather and there are apparentally fish around  :D.

We start in the run where I think he had gotten them (he described the run to us). I work through with a colorado while my friend goes upriver. Nothing in that run  :-[. We next head up to the run where I have hit something 2 of the 4 trips and even got the nice wild out of. Work all the way through and nothing on the prawns or colorado  :(.

We decide to walk all the way to where we normally start and hit the 1st run. At the very end of the tailout, where my friend hit the fish yesterday, he gets one again  ::)  :o (not exactly same spot but close). He calls me and says "I have a fish." I look at his rod (while reaching for the camera to video tape it) and ask him if hes sure. I start taping and it finally moves... It fought a lot like a spring. I say it looks like a Steelhead but as it gets closer, before I can even tell, he yells "It's a dolly". Sure enough a big fat dolly around 4 pounds comes into the beach

Confidence restored  ;D  We keep moving down to another area where we have hooked fish. All of a sudden I hear a large "roaring" type sound that last about 2 seconds  ??? All of a sudden my friend yells, I look back to him, thinking he has heard it... He hasn't, but he points me across river and my eyes meet a guy battling a fish. After a short 2 or so min battle (hooked it right at shore) he drags it onto the beach and bonks a nice 10ish hatch.  ::)  We keep working down. Get back to the run we started at (about 15 mins since the bang) and he asks "Is the water colouring up?"  I had noticed but thought I was losing it... within 30 seconds the water went from 5+ feet vis to less than a foot   >:(  :(  I no longer feel confident and the vis keeps getting worse, and we have a bad wade ahead. He asks if I want to try a spot down lower to beat it, I say sure  :-\  On our way out I'm watching the water. All of a sudden 2 different fish (about 15 feet apart) roll at the same time  :o  I try casting there but with like 8 inches of vis there is no point. We do the sketchy wade and head downriver. Finish the day at tamahi in the clear water, but to no avail.

So our days was pretty much as this goes : Fishing buddy has pretty much caught EVERY single fish in the river besides a Steelhead (including whitefish, resident bows, and dollies).  Beautiful sunny, warm weather that felt like spring almost. 4 fish seen and heard of another 2 in the same area. Hopefully the vis is better for you guys tomorrow.

Tight lines,
Dan

I was out today as well, but for the first time of the year for me.. Talked to probably a dozen plus others today with nothing and I briefly encountered one that stole my roe, but was slow today mid river. With that said, it was a GREAT time and did well like medicine just to get out, hike around and make some casts.

What a fantastic day today!

Thanks Guys,I wasn't planning to fish again after the Derby was over but while I was standing at edge of the bank gazing at the river and the mountains and all the beauty it beholds,I overheard you and your fishing Buddy talking "We should go back there, man theres some sweet water back there"I thought to myself what the hell I may as well fish a few near by holes on my way home I don"t normally fish anymore I won"t have to put my waders back on and it about time for the 3 O'Clock bite after all,so off I went I got there in all of about 5 minutes grabbed my vest rod and down the bank I went.i set my float at about 6 feet to the lead that should be enough to keep me off the bottom I thought, after a couple a casts and about 5 minutes go by I thought to myself I know why I don"t fish here much anymore, cause it"s slow boring water so I fold up my rod pull off whats left of my bug, hmm, that bug looks chewed upon. What the hell, put my rod back together put on a fresh bug and throw it out next to the heavy current, float dissapears instantly.I lean back hard on the 3106 and feel the weight of a good fish she comes out of the water twice and rolls herself repeatedly in the line trying to gain freedom.I pull her in closer in less ten minutes and see it"s a nice hatch doe about 12 pounds.I pull her toward my feet with all force I dare put on the eight pound leader and snap, she lays still in about 6 inch of water and Ina split second I drop my 600 hundred dollar rod on the rocks, left hand squeezes the tail right hand under the belly and carry her 10 feet or so from shore to quickly dispatch her.Now I"m tinking who"d believe a story like this without a picture "sure you caught a big fish after you left the derby, sure you did".So figured there would still be people at the cedars  so back  i went with my fish still wriggling slightly, she was 32 3\4 inches and exactly 13 pounds on my home scale. So thanks again Every Day and Big Fisher cause your enthusesum for continuing to keep fishing is contagious, ;) ;D

Wow, Nice one DRH it pays off to keep your float in the water alittle longer. It's too bad that fish waited an hour after the derby....  ::)
I had my chance with a 4-5 lb steely, but this one got a free ticket, and slipped away.

Great looking fish and your perseverance pays off. Congrats DRH. Too bad I caught my fish a day earlier but can't complain in these slow times. Will the derby ever be held on Saturday for those of us city family men having to attend church with the family but don't have Chris' advantage of having the river behind his house so he can still dip his line for a steelie after church service?  ;D
