Took a walk from peach to lickman, talked to 20 or so guys, and not much happening. I know there around, the bite must be off this afternoon.

fished from 1 to 5:30, the water was perfect!! no fish for me but I did manage to have some excitement. I was helping an older guy who had his second fish on for the afternoon, we had to bring this fish down river at least 100 yards before we could land it. We see that it is a hatch, which was over 19 pounds!! no joke, I try to tail the fish but can't get a good grip, he tries to bring it into shallower water, 12 pound leader breaks and the fish lays there stunned, I pick it up and he tries to get his fingers under the gill plate (he intends to bonk it). We struggle with this fish but he can't seem to get his fingers under the gill plate, it slithers out of my hands and I dive for it, grab it again and it slithers into the green water to see another day. Really funny experience. All in all I saw 4 fish on and 1 bonked with 1 sorta landed. I was fishing between the lower and the upper ;)

simply curious....

how could you tell if it was a 19# fish and not perhaps a 17.5, 18, or even an 18.5? Was it clearly a 19 and not a 20?

Regardless, bummer way to cracker off a fish.

I take a conservative guess based on other fish that I've handled, for instance I had a fish the other day that I thought was for sure around 12#, took some quick measurements and based on those the fish was over 15 pounds (36"L x 18.5"G). The fish today was the biggest hatchery I have ever seen.

Headed out today for a fun filled day on the river.

We got an early start today in hopes of finding some fish to quench our steel thirst. We mainly focused our efforts down in the lower canal and up to KWB.

Right at 1st light, I was running my roe and float down this sweet little run and I could just tell it was fishy. My 4th drift down this slick, float goes down and it's ON! Fight this fish and managed to bring her to hand, not a monster but an absolute beauty doe, about 8-9 pounds. What a great way to start the day and a great way to take that early morning chill off.

In all of my excitement, I had managed to ignore my buddy that was up river from me a ways and I hadn't realized that he had already been into a fish as well and lost it. I could not believe this. We are less that 15 minutes into our day and already 2 fish down here. He had been bragging about his roe that he had cured up, so he had to rub it in my face that it was the reason we were hooking up since i was using his roe as well.

We decided to stay down in this area of the river until around lunch time and managed to hook 4 fish between the both of us. We got 3 to hand and managed to lose just that one at 1st light.

After lunch, we headed up to Lickman area and worked a few runs around that area but no fish were cooperating so we lost interest and finished out our day back down in the canal.

I had decided to hang out near the bridge at KW for the most part. Glad I did, I managed to hook 2 and land one of them. My buddy focused his efforts down lower in the canal and didn't hit anything else.

To date, this was perhaps my best outing in the lower section as I have generally avoided the canal.

Well, good luck out there everyone! Tomorrow can't come fast enough!

big fish dont come easy. I think guys loose alot of those bigger fish because they fish so light, 6 and 8lb leaders with #4 and 2 hooks. Makes it easier to shack off one of those giants. I hope the big nates are in the system now!
