sadly I was not on the other end of the line :( I was fishing roe bags and an older guy who I was fishing the same stretch of water with was fishing jigs tipped with prawn. He had 5 fish on, 3 of which were landed and safely released (wild chromies). I could not believe it! they were loving the jigs. he taught me a thing or two about how to fish jigs, and I will definitely be giving those a try tomorrow morning. What part of river? lets just say "somewhere in between the top and bottom" :-X

I decided to brave the cold to give it a go on the Chilliwack River between the Keith Wilson Bridge and Highway 1. It was really fridgid out and there was a nice strong wind to help things out - fortunately it warmed as the day went on.

There was nothing for me and there were about 10 other fishermen about.   It surprised me to see that many considering this is the middle of the week and the weather conditions    I saw one Steelhead caught right below the Keith Wilson bridge - a really beautiful silver one.  That spot seems to attract more fishermen than fish :)

With things so slow I took it as a good opportunity to walk around and explore the river a bit.

I know what you're saying dieter, i've had a few really nice jigs that went for the "water burial", i guess at times though it can turn the fish on. Fishing the Stamp this past feb. with Murphy's, jigs is all we used (for bait ban areas), they fish them pretty shallow though and with spinning rods. It is definitely worth adding something to the arsenal if you can afford it ;D man I spend so much freaking money on this sport, there is always something new that I want.

short floating may help you stay clear of some of the rocks
I would think that jigs are not for all water conditions or runs
But sounds like they work well in the right areas

Ive tried jigs for the first time this year and there all on the bottom of the river now,lol .Rock magnets is what they have been for myself, gets expensive after awhile. This old fella was he american with a white beard from Bellingham?

No need to fish them right on the bottom. Try them approx. 1-2 feet off the bottom.

yeah our guide (Rolly) said that he would definitely be using roe or prawn if it were not for the ban. He felt that jigs worked particularly well in slow clear water. If you look at a jig and how it drifts, it actually looks like fry which I guess brings up some memories for those steelies and they attack.

Used to fish jigs, very poplular down south...Done very well with the prawn on the tip for all kinds of fish...

If your losing them, try using a float and a shorter leader...they are not meant to bang along the bottom..like a fly, the marabou works best when it is moving...

Whats shortfloating? Is that using a shorter float, like a 4" foam dink instead of a 5" or 6". Im always fishing on the bottom for the steel, they say if your not losing gear your not fishing right. I lose a lot of gear in a a day!
Maybe thats why you haven't experienced a 5 fish day lol.

Dieter, that's a lot of lead left behind on the bottom of the river and a lot more dollars spent . You should try a float, 1 to 3 feet to the swivel(depending on water depth) and finish it off with a foot and a half leader from the swivel. Not all water is best covered by bottom bouncing. ::)

I try to get around good fishermen and watch how they are fishing any given, hole or run, checking out what their depth is. Its helped me out quite a bit, cause it can be tricky, sometimes fishing too shallow. too deep and you know cause you are losing all your gear, too shallow....you might not know. Seems like you need to go till you "tink" bottom and then come up 1 to 2 feet.
