Lafarge Lake, March 13th 2009
« on: March 13, 2009, 05:20:35 PM »

I had a go at this today hoping that I might see some activity after yesterday's stocking but it was slow out there.

I started by trolling a green woolly bugger.  After trying that for about an hour that I went to a smaller sized halfback with some flash in it - still nothing.   Thinking they might be sitting near the bottom I then tried a sink tip leader to get my fly down deeper - no luck with that either :'(

While trolling about I was observing others on the lake and I saw one guy get two from the shore - with a bottom bait rig I think.   He was the only lucky one while I was there.

I can only think we need things to warm up some more.   Hopefully it will improve for those of you thinking of heading out there this weekend.

the stocked in fish usually take 2-3 days to start feeding as it must be quite stressful being pumped through a tube LOL I will be out there sunday (unless its a downpour) If you head out come by and say hi Fishseeker. I will be in a blue fishcat with my dad also on a blue fishcat.

Try a quick retrieve with those olive wooly buggers  ;) If you have any pumpkinhead flies i would try those out also.

Yep that was me dredging the entire lake.  Where were you?

Hmmm...I don't know.   You would think, logically, that the fish would not be feeding on account of stress but I have been out the very next day one time last year and there was a hit on every second cast.  Maybe that was a weird exception.   Good luck out there Sunday Hook,  I was thinking of heading out then but other things have come up.  It would be good to catch up with you one of these days :)

Most of the time I was trolling very slowly because I figured the fish might be slow on account of the cold water.   I did try some fast trolls too but that didn't appear to help.   There are so many times I go out thinking the conditions should be favorable and come back empty handed, there is just so much to learn about this sport. ???

Really?  I would very much like to know your secret to success :o  I have usually found early morning or evening better but with this recent cold snap I wasn't sure that would help.

soon after they stock them, they travel in one big group and always go to the same place stocking after stocking

they are in 1ft-4ft of water and close to shore. a belly boat is by far the worst thing you could do this time of year, and not to mention a waste of time. on the other hand, unless you want to sit along the shore and cast, there is still really no need for one. slow strips from shore with leech patterns is the best thing as the water is still cold.

Interesting.  I did see the odd gull taking a dive into the shallow water - that would explain it.  Something else I will have to file away for future reference.  I generally prefer not to use the boat unless I absolutely have to - it's a pain to pump up and fold away.

Is this always the pattern or only when the water is cold?  I guess I had the mistaken impression that the fish always head for the deep water when it's cold or hang around the drop off areas.

it produced well today to. Ethan and i spent a few hours out there in the rain and landed 7 fish. Got into a bunch more. We chucked flyes for a bit in our usual spot but when it didnt produce we got lazy and just floated powerbait of the new dock.

Well good luck tomorrow.  I have Monday/Tues off so I might try again then when things are quieter - there should still be some fish left. (I won't ask about any secret spots  ;) , the lake is not that big.)

I think I'll try and brave the rain with my 5 year old daughter tomorrow. She told me just to bring our rain jackets and it should be fine.  :o What a little trooper.  ;D  I'll be out in the morning tossing some powerbait off the new dock. She's excited to use the new Hannah Montana rod combo I just bought her. It's a "Big Girl" rod. Should be a fun time anyways.
