Kawkawa Lake, March 14th 2009

my friend and i went up to kawkawa lake expecting to use my dads 12' with 7.5 merc
when we got there it turned out that some undesirable citizens had stolen the fuel tank , hoses and oil from my uncles house leaving us with no power except rowing

there were 100s of fish surfacing but we got nothing
what should we have been using?
there is still ice at the main launch but the one in a skinny lane is clear
all in all it was a good day

When fish are surfacing like that, you'd be more successful by using the following methods.

Trolling a fly, any small fly (#12, 14, 16) in red, green, olive etc would work.

Float fishing with krill or single eggs.

Indicator fishing with chronies.

I've even done quite well by spincasting with a fly. A weighted float or small piece of lead would do the job.

Anyone else caught fish?

Yup. March 14th as well.


Even though they were surfacing all over, they were going BONKERS for krill. I have never felt that many bites since I have been fishing. A few guys were getting a couple here and there on flys but man that krill action is crazy !!

the weather was the worst I have possibly fished in, I was near hypothermia near the end of our trip but it was worth it ! Those kok's taste really good too. I'm going back before the bite dies off thats for sure.

Can u fish your krill on a floating fly line with an indacater?

I guess so......I was trying to get em on the fly but didnt have the time to give it a good try. We only lasted 2 1/2 hours in the blowing wind and sleet. At first I got bites on a loud salmon streamer and then added some krilll to the tip. That worked pretty good.

Im thinking a good hybrid would be to take bright ( yellow , pink , orange ) flies you don't care about and soak them in krill oil. Its more about the scent than the actual krill. That would save you from re-baiting every 2nd cast.
