Fishing the flats March 15th
« on: March 26, 2009, 10:51:23 AM »

Gave fishing the flats on the west coast of Florida a try during Spring Break. We fished a size 4 clouser minnow in anywhere from 2-6 feet of water. This was my first time fly fishing outside of BC. Sarasota Bay is amazingly shallow, unlike the beaches we have here locally. The wind was terrible, turning the usually clear waters very murky and uprooting alot of the grass. We chased the school of "Mullets", in hopes to hook into some redfish, which our captain says will follow these vegetarians that loosen up the shrimp and crab hiding in the weeds. No redfish today. We did however hook into a few new species, which is always a treat. Ladyfish, pinfish, and local trout. All in all, it was a tough outing on the fly. The clouser was outfished by the jigs, but the itchy sunburn on my legs will remind me of this trip for the next few days still :) Next time, I'd like to try later in the year for some bigger fish  ;)
