I just got the new May 2009 STS magazine and they comment and sell food for feeding smolts in the wild.
They suggest that since their rivers have no huge returns of dead salmon and eggs to promote growth and fertilize the river, that many salmon and steelhead smolts will starve in less nutrient rich rivers.
So they recommend that you buy fish food pellets (Same as fish Farms), and distrubute them on you fishing trip to help bring back the number of fish in the river.
Of coarse they recommend hide out of sight when you feed the smolts, and you feed the smolts between April- Oct.
They sell feed for the fish from there Amato Publishing.
This is the first i have ever heard of this, I always assumed it was illegal to feed wild animals, unless they took it off my hook.
But people feed wild birds.
Have you heard of this thing happening up here in BC..
In theory it should work or would it just be a drop in the bucket.
I personally would wait for it to be recommend locally, but what a great way for us to help save the fish we love, the more you fish the more you can feed the little ones, but on the other hand what makes our wild fish great is that only the strong survive.
I just found it odd that Sts magazine would recommend this to there readers.
