Berkley Gulp! Trout Bait
« on: July 04, 2009, 05:05:51 PM »

Has anyone tried using Berkley Gulp! Dough Trout Bait or Berkley Gulp! Dough Trout Nuggets for Trout or any other kind of fish?

Would using the gulp dough be complete over kill and a waste of money for coarse fishing?

Thanks,

Never tried it myself but heard it works. Friends have told me the nuggets are a lot easier to use than the dough. Stays on the hook better.

nuggets are a little easier to use than the dough and are not as messy and they work the best on stocked trout. When you use either make sure to role it in your dry hands and have it securely on the hook.

Nuggets stay on the hook better than the other stuff.

I've only had success with stocked trout, and even then it was limited.  Better luck with spinners or spoons

If you are going for coarse fish species in the Fraser River, then commercially developed bait products are indeed an overkill for the amount of money that you are spending on them.

A mixture of plain flour and water that is made into a dough works just as well for peamouth chub, northern pikeminnow etc. For better result, add some flavour into it when mixing. Something sweet, something fishy, something shrimpy, be creative and experiment. To prevent the bait from being too sticky or dissolving too fast in the water, add some cornmeal into the mixture. Shrimp, dew worm, tiny pieces of fish flesh, roe also work, but just messier.

Come on out to Fish for the Future on Saturday July 11th, I'll have all these bait available for people to experiment with.

For stocked rainbow trout in the Lower Mainland lakes, deli shrimp is my favorite bait to use, simply because they are easy to thread onto the hook and fish cannot resist them.

Berkeley Gulp worked for me. I used Gulp when it first came out and I believe that almost ALL the fish -especially stocked trout - are sick of Powerbait because everyone used Powerbait. GULP really performed for salmon fishing on the rivers.  I used the Mister Twister style gulp.

Thanks for the comments guys.

The only reason why I asked is because I am not having much luck with spoons&spinners right now and I figured I would give bait a try. I use to shrimp most of the time and I figured I would try something new.

I was thinking of using the powerbait dough because I figured it would less messy... But I guess I can give normal/flavour dough first.

Would gulp work in the Fraser right now since its so muddy? or does most, if not all, gulp come scented?

I was also thinking of using a combination of dough plus mini gulps, any comments?
