Squamish River & Howe Sound, July 27th 2009

  Met some guys on the river who were at FC yesterday and they said it was extremely quiet. I hit all three rivers (Mamquam, Cheak, and Squamish) Mamquam has zero visibility surprizingly and looks more like the fraser right now. Cheakamus and Squamish very similar, good thing is they were forecasting severe t-storms last night and they didn't come to fruition so hopefully the water settles down and we can get our lines in the water. No fish seen by me in the two hours I was mulling around the area. Soon enough!

  Was out again today and the rivers are still just as high and just as dirty. Won't be cleaned up till the weather cools I'd say!  Just a reminder to people fishing Furry Creek because today there seemed to be some confusion and some misinformation given even by a Vancouver tackle shop that there is ZERO retention of chinooks at Furry Creek. Anything past Gambier is no retention.

and the small chinook you catch there are NOT JACKS, they are immature chinook. when it was open to retention I seen many people killing fish under the size limit......"du-hic duh-hic its a jack"......this is SALT WATER (TIDAL)

whats the diff? immature means they are young - as in came back early...aka jack springs.

Immature springs in the ocean may not be heading back to the river though Dennisk. They may be resident fish. Jacks in the river are back early but are not immature as they do ending up spawning. Natures way of avoiding a particular year of being wiped out.

ahhh' so they are jacks in the river but unknown in the ocean.

I looked at DFO site, http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/rec/tidal-maree/a-s28-eng.htm

looks like Chinook are open year round to retention of fish 62cm and over. Not sure where the info it's closed is coming from.

 I am trying to find the info myself. Phoned Whistler Fly fishing and had been told past Gambier is close to chinook retention. I also remeber reading about it earlier in the year.

I just discussed this with the area manager to get a concrete answer for everyone. While retention of chinook salmon in the Squamish River is closed, the Upper Howe Sound is opened for chinook salmon retention (two fish over 62cm per day) as stated in RalphH's link.
