Subject: FN0597-RECREATIONAL - SALMON: Region 3 - Thompson River - Non-retention of Chinook Salmon
Effective August 7, 2009 at 00:01 hours, you may not retain Chinook salmon in
those waters of the Thompson River between the upstream side of the confluence
of the Thompson and Nicola Rivers and the powerline that crosses between the
Highway No. 1 Bridge and the Highway No. 8 Bridge at Spences Bridge, BC.
Current surface temperatures in the Nicola River are in the range of 24° C to
26° C. Water temperatures in the Thompson and Fraser Rivers are in the 20° C
range. In previous years temperatures in these ranges have resulted in
significant pre-spawn mortalities on this system. In addition, stream flows in
the Nicola and Coldwater Rivers are at or below 40-50 year lows. Based on this
information and in order to reduce further impacts on Chinook salmon returning
to the Nicola River system, the retention of Chinook salmon in the area
described above is prohibited.
Variation Order 2009-311.
