I just returned from a holiday in the Campbell River area and the fishing was pretty good. Lots of pinks in the system, very few springs. I was staying around Cape Lazo and saw lots of folks fishing from shore for pinks and cuts, not a lot caught, but (as usual) I was a week or two late as they were thick as thieves before that. All I got were sculpins .

One thing that really ticked me off was a guy at the Campbell busily cleaning his catch - WAY over limit. I casually followed him up to his vehicle, recorded the license plate number, and confronted him. He got all angry with me, claiming it was none of my business and made a few gestures that didn't include going for a coffee. I reported him, for all the good it will do.

Way to go, good to hear it. That idiot does not know how wrong he is when he says it is none of your business. It is every anglers business to patrol for poaching on every outing! Also I was told by a CO Dispatcher that even if they cannot attend immediatly they will pay the guy a visit at some point and caution him about regulations. I would'nt be surprised if they red flag him too! So It does do some good.

I appreciate your concern but you are just asking for trouble confronting someone who is breaking the law.

Report it I understand; anything more then that is just being a cowboy. No one will take your side if you got slashed or beat up - cops especially would say you contributed to it.

And a fish is really not worth it.  You got lucky he was not a violent nutbar like a few I've seen poaching.

Too bad fishing was slow...did you get up to the Quinsam at all?

Reminds me of the time a good samitarian confronted a snagger in the parking lot of the Capilano River. The snagger turned and laid a beating on the guy. Nobody offered any assistance.

I agree maybe confronting a normal person might be effective, but confront a poacher is asking for trouble.

My legendary Nova Scotian temper just got the better of me this time. Most times I'd just play detective and file a report , but this was so blatant and , well, angering, I just had to say something.  It galls me no end to see generous limits flouted with little or regard for anything but personal greed. If I made him aware that others are watching, he may think twice about doing it again. If I even just made him upset - Mission accomplished. And if he gets a visit from an official    I'll have a little dance in the streets.

Sorry Dennis, I got off track. I just had a couple of hours, all spent on the Campbell but I'm going back up in a few weeks. There was a few fish in Courtnay , but a school of seals was feeding freely. I should have stopped and talked to them instead.

In the past when I have seen someone break the rules I have approached them and informed them of the rule I thought they were breaking. Probably most times I have done this the person had not idea they were breaking any rules.

Last year a guy was cleaning two beatiful wild coho at the dock at campbell river and thougt they were springs. Other people walked by and I'm sure they knew they were illegal but said nothing. I was glad I told him to prevent somethign like that happening again.

As far as the wackos who knowingly break the rules in full view of others, well I would certainly proceed with caution. The police or any other authorities would NOT advise you to try and enforce the law. And, if violence did come up, help from anyone other than your friends is not going to happen.

Oh, and back to fishing. I will be up in Browns Bay, north of Campbell Rive for the next week. I'll file a report...

I think there is a big difference between informing, and confronting. To educate a person in a respectfull maner has never caused me any harm. I am always sensative to their responce, and if I detect any aggresion or ambivalence, I continue on my way and phone the C O hot line.

I agree with you, it's all about the approach.
Dennis, yes, I would be willing to take a calculated risk.
Obviously I am not saying kids should be confronting poachers, but few selected guys should stand for what they believe.
