New Resident to chilliwack and fisherman to Chilliwack/Vedder
« on: August 26, 2009, 09:29:09 PM »

Just want to say Hi :)
New to this site I moved to Chilliwack from Edmonton been here almost a yr.I did a lot of fishing in Alberta, trying to learn to salmon fish don't know where to start I don't have a heavy enough rod ,I have a spinning rod  7 foot medium action is there a small enough salmon to catch on a light rod around here?  I also have a fly rod 9 foot sage 9# not sure what type of fly to use for salmon would love to catch a salmon on a fly.I did fish for steel head this winter but got skunked using fly rod.
If anybody could point me in the right direction that would be appreciated

Welcome. What's the pound test rating of the spinning rod? If it is in the range of 6 to 12lb test, then it would be an ideal spincasting rod for coho and pink salmon on the Chilliwack River this fall. While most people float fish with roe for coho salmon, you can do just as well by casting spoons and spinners. Pink salmon fishing should be good in most of September, while coho fishing typically starts in mid September and peaks in the first two weeks of October, but will continue until mid November as it tapers off. Gibbs Croc and Koho in the 1/4 to 3/8oz range. Silver, gold, copper with orange stripes work well. Good luck!

The fish that you saw could have been a sockeye salmon, a coho salmon or a pink salmon. This time of the year is typically the break between the summer and fall salmon runs, but some fall salmon may arrive early so it is always worth trying.
