Tidal Fraser River, August 28th 2009
« on: August 28, 2009, 08:21:20 PM »

As it was my mom & dad's wedding anniversary ...55 yrs married...my dad who has the majority ownership of our Arima boat had to spend the day of course with my mom. (mom does not like boating on the Fraser R...) So when he wants to go out in the boat ...that's when I can get out too---- Anyways thought I'd change my bike route ride for today & head to the Fraser R. & check if there were people out sportfishing & how they were doing. There was a fair number out around Gilbert Rd to #3 ...every 30 yds there was someone casting out lures. Even a fly-fisherman. Talked to one guy who looked like in his 30's who had a spinner...& he casted it a really good distance. (Over 100 ft possibly.) Went over & talked to a few more fishermen...one of whom said he has fished the Fraser for over 60 yrs.  Then when riding westward the guy in his 30's is putting a pink into a plastic bag... Well his hard work paid off.(also told him about FWR site)  But from what I seen not very many were catching anything. One guy told me he knows of someone who caught a pink at Gerrry Pt Park today.  So decided to ride to Gerry Pt Park & I meet a member here on this site Randolph20.... He's fishing at the Pk near the enterence to the harbour. Nice to have met him...he's a "good talker"... Then farther down even bumped into Rod & his friends. So for all you who have never said ya met Rod well I think this is at least the 3rd time for me. --- The beauty of that whole area by the park is so great... views etc... & the water looked really clear & clean.  Man who has fished the Fraser for 60 yrs says it will be another 2 wks unless there is a big rainfall then the pinks will move in earlier in big numbers.... Well who knows... Canso seems to have done very well ( 7 pinks on the newspaper pic) as he's caught alot of pinks in the river.  :)

I don't flyfishing for pink salmon at Garry Point Park, or do much flyfishing for pink salmon actually. The only area where you can flyfishing for pink salmon are the rocky shores in the park that access the main channel of the river. Since you are standing on the rocks, you'd need to constantly watch behind you to make sure you do not hit anyone with your backcast. For that reason alone, I don't flyfish there especially during peak season when many other people are doing the same thing. The only flyfishing that I do at Garry Point Park are in the bays where I can wade out, targeting bull trout and cutthroat trout. This way I have plenty of backcasting room unless dogs jump into the water behind me. Definitely gotta do whatever possible to avoid hooking someone with the backcast. One incident may see the park shut out for anglers as the City of Richmond is always very concerned about liability.

A better place for flyfishing is the Dump Bar behind Triangle Road where you can wade out a bit from the beach.

Water clarity is very good now. Visibility is plenty for flyfishing.

I don't know about 2 more weeks.  They have been slaying them in Washington State on the Snohomish, Skagit and Skykomish this whole past week, (35-50 fish days).  I'm headed there today.  Those rivers are way smaller than the Frazer and are still getting fish.

thanks a lot Rod, but can you be more specific? as far as i know about the area you mentioned, isn't it mostly yards for import cars parking there? so where exactly is that beach you are talking about?

Behind Silvercity, turn onto Triangle Road from No. 6 Road. Drive around and follow the road to the gravel road that leads to the beaches.

Yea Bentrod's I was just down in the states.
Every time we drove past the Skagit there were people fighting fish.
Too bad I was shopping and not fishing  :'(
No idea why they are so late down here but the rivers next door to us are just PACKED with fish.

Fraser River pink salmon are not late. The run typically peaks in the first two weeks of September, plus or minus one week. Small schools have been moving into the river, pretty typical in late August.

I agree with Rodney, the pinks are not late.  Fraser Pinks are never really steady until the first week of September.
