Tidal Fraser River, September 6th 2009
« on: September 06, 2009, 10:00:59 AM »

After some failed attempts I finally got lucky in New West.  Not expecting much I figured I would get out there at first light about 1 hour before high tide which is, apparently, the best time.

First half hour of casting yeilded nothing so I decided to move.  I don't think moving really made the difference but I was getting bored and wanted to explore a bit.  Eventually found a spot about 100 yards from where I saw another guy getting one so I thought it would be worth a try.  Within about the first ten casts I felt that exilerating tug and after a few head shakes it got off.  Feeling dissapointed and encouraged at the same time I made another cast and had a hit right at my feet (even saw the flash of silver as it turned away).

Now I was really excited,  next three casts fish on.   Trying not to get too eager I held back on him letting him run as much as he wanted and eventually coaxed him into the net.

This one will go to the bbq.

Anyway, another three casts and much to my delight another hit right at my feet.  So close in fact that it was right over my feet in about two seconds before it turned for a blistering run out.   I held back again and eventually coaxed it to the net.

(This one was gently released)

After that I had another two right at my feet but both got off after after a few minutes.   The one spat my hook about a foot from shore then jumped right onto the shore for me.  Couldn't help laughing but I let him go.

All in all a fantastic morning - my first Fraser pinks.   My only regret was not taking the fly rod because I am guessing they were no more than four meters out.  Every hit was right before I was about to pick the spoon out of the water (...unless they were followers).

Good luck out there.

A bunch of us endured the hurricane-force wind this morning from 6:30am to 9:30am. When the rain came down heavily right before I left, I thought that I would be the only nutcase there today. That was hardly the case, I was in fact the last one to arrive at the usual spot. ::) Lucky and Obi Wan were already fishing. Vince, Raf and Fish Assassin soon followed. Even Daniel from DNE came down for a peek.

The bites were kind of on right from the beginning. Lucky reported his two hook-ups prior to my arrival but he was unlucky again by not landing any. I hooked up not long after I started and landed the brightest female pink salmon so far of my season. Obi Wan also landed a nice female. My dad, who had just arrived from Taiwan last night, was eager to get out this morning. He hooked up a large male fairly far from shore. The fish was netted after a good fight.

After a few hook-ups among us, the bites seemed to have died off. Daniel's phone rang while he and I were having a chat. His friend reported lots of action just several hundred meters further downstream. He decided to head down there, just in case if the fish were circling. I was hopefully that they would make their way up to us soon after.

Another 30 minutes went by and just when my dad was thinking about quitting, Lucky was into a fish but it was lost before making its way into my net. My dad hooked one a few minutes later and landed a beautiful doe.

At the same time, Vince also found a fish on his line. A school of fish was obviously moving through. While putting my dad's fish away, he hooked into another fish, which was lost. A few minutes later, he lost another one. I finished the day by hooking two more fish and long line released them as well. We decided to finish the outing while it was good at 9:45am.

There are plenty of fish around, but it may just take some time to entice them.

Well today was my first day out for fraser pinks ever, started off slow, but then stared to pick up.  Got into a pikeminnow first, then started into the pinks.  Must have got into 12 or 13, and had like 8 or 9 to the beach.  Ended up taking 2 home.   All in all, today was the most fun I have ever had fishing.  Had one pikeminnow take a hit about ten feet in front of me, and when I went to set the hook the poor little bugger flew about 20 feet behind me.

3 of us were out today and we all limited out and C&R a bunch. Best day so far for us. I would post the only photo I have but its quite the blood bath of fish in a cooler. I dont kill many fish during the year. I do however love smoked pinks. So I am taking advantage of this fishery and keeping enough for my family to enjoy the smoked salmon for quite some time. My digital 6 rack Bradley is going to be working on overtime soon LOL

One other thing. This evening around 6pm the fish rolled in and literally thousands of fish were around. It didnt matter where you looked fish were rolling and jumping. Funny thing is they were not biting. I told my buddies I have already experienced this. I told them that when they stop rolling non stop that the biters will show up and as soon as they stopped the biters showed up ;)

Edit to add some after photos of the catch

ended the skunk today...got one within the first 2 hours of incoming tide...caught it with a homemade spinner (gold/chartreuse colorado blade with orange tape on the inside of the blade and tubing on the hook) it was the first time I caught a fish on something I made - pretty sweet! the wife lost one at shore...saw a bunch jumping throughout the entire afternoon - good times!

Another day with exceptional results. I spent the first 2 hours watching others hook fish. I then wandered down a trail looking and parked it on a piling just after a dock in New West. I hooked into one immediately and it just got better from there. I hooked 5, lost 3 and landed 2. One 3 lb female, and a whopping 5 lb male sporting a mean hump. A friend of mine caught one with a horrible gash on its side and it was released.

Gotta love it!

Could have sworn it was hump day

What lure is working for you?  I had a lot of success two years ago with a 3/8 pink croc.  But that one is just not working.

The 3/8 fire orange/clear and orange/black (tiger stripe)crocs  have been doing really well for me this week. Only problem is finding them as everywhere seems sold out.

3/8 is too heavy.  You have to retreive too fast and lose alot of the action of the lure.
I use 3/16 or 1/4 crocs.  Been fishing this year's pink run since beginning of august up in Furry Creek/Squamish.
Have landed easily over 100 fish using the cerise coloured 1/4oz croc.
When the bite is off, but fish are clearly present, I switch to the smaller size.  Seems to work
