Fraser Valley, October 2nd 2009: Chum on the fly

Well I decided to spend my morning on one of the local rivers with the fly rod in search of some fish. I saw alot of pinks and a few coho but was not expecting to hook up with some chum today but that is exactly what happened. Got to one of my favorite spots where the river bowls out and really slows down. I could see that there where fish there as they where rising. I stood back from the river and strung my fly rod and put on a fly. I walked slowly threw the grass so not to spook the fish and on my first cast this is what hit. It was a great battle back and forth and everytime I thought I had him ready to be tailed he took off. I was able to land him, got a quick photo and released back to the river. It went on like this for a couple of hours until my arms said ok that is enough. Was a great morning to be out all by myself.

nice fish.they are around here and there for sure.

there are not hard to catch on the fly - The Vedder/Chilliwack, Harrison, Stave and the Squamish(if it is open) are all good as are some other small streams. For flies - I find a bead head olive wooly bugger with some effective and any pink or orange pattern of marabou, rabbit strip or arctic fox effective. They take it stripped in slow water and on the swing in riffles and runs.

  On this side for sure. Was on a river on the outside of the Island and saw thousands of the buggers in a day. Good job Geff T nice fish!!!
