I have to agree with a lot of the comments on that study ! what a gigantic waste of money to study something that anybody with a brain of some sort already knows
it is amazing what useless subjects this country decides to waste money on

Haha, no doubt... I looks like some poor grad student needed a thesis topic .  I remember fishing the Coquitlam a lot while growing up, back when they used to stock it; every other fish had a cigarette butt in it's stomach.  Ahhh good times!

I know it's been brought up before, but I'd be more concerned with all the lead deposited in the river every year by anglers (along with all the other non-degreable junk).

Lead may slowly leach (emphasis on slowly), but the cigarette butts look like floating food to fish.

I've been fishing for 30 years, and have yet to find a butt in a fish stomach, seems to me most think their sense of smell is so good that that alot of fisherman wont even smoke while fishing, why would they just throw caution to the wind and eat a butt, but maybe if its true....HHmmmmm, I wonder if they prefer export over players?

I've only been fishing 4 years and have seen this on many occasions.
I remember last year on a high elevation lake someone dropped a pack of cigarettes in the lake (maybe had 3 or 4 smokes in it). For the next hour there were fishing literally splashing all around and ripping apart the cigarettes.

I have also on many occasions found cigarette butts in the stomach's of Steehead. There have also been many other weird things (peices of pens, chunks of metal, leaves, sticks, friends found paintballs one time). Pretty much confirms with me that a Steelhead will hit anything you put in front of its face.

I smoke like a chimney but always bring an empty smoke pack or ziplock bag to store my butts.

 The sad part is that I'm sure it could trigger a hit in certain systems, but only if presented properly
