« on: November 26, 2009, 01:33:37 AM »

lets get this right i am not looking for a special spot i enjoy the hiking of the river. but i am new and i am sure there's other newbies, and i have no idea how to fish for steelhead. i am just looking for some tips on how to fish, like is it the same as salmon, like short floating with wool or colorado's because thats what i used for this years salmon fishing.

This will be my fifth year hunting for this amazing fish. Last year around this time a good friend of mine(Ali) and myself went to the Stamp river. We both laded fish back to back within minutes. He pulled out a 14lbs chrome Doe and i pulled out a 17lbs chrome Buck, both hatchery. Since then i have only seen people catch Steelies. We fish the Veddor due diligently but no luck. I was wondering is there a secret bait the veddor Steelies like? Special Roe? or Jigs maybe? I have also noticed that using fluorocarbon line with smaller hooks definitely helps to get more fish on. Any and all tips welcome. Thanks ;D

Daisy - 5yrs and nothing yet  :o who did you pi** off LOL realistically steelhead are pretty easy to hook. they will hit just about anything if you get it infront of them, sometimes just changing up what your using will get a strike. I had one day where i got a strike everytime i switched up, and everytime the fish got away  ::) until he finally on the last time hooking him up he ran and busted loose  :'( however i did get to see the fish landed about 45mins later and helped gently guide it into a hatchery tube  ;D

I normally swing flies for steelhead now but i will be doing a few gear trips out there also this time around. Your more then welcome to join us if you want. Im not a master but i do know how to catch fish  ;)
