Tunkwa Lake Resort is embracing the ice fishing in full force! Of course the owners being easterners they know all the tricks we see on all the fishing shows from Ontario.

They have huts you can rent that seat 4 with a few windows and a wood stove..we are going to give it a go in the next few weeks.

--please leave the larger poor tasting mudders for other sport fishers.

The best tasting fish I have ever caught was through the ice, no muddy flavor.  We used to fish Loon Lake between Clinton and Cache Creek and always did well.  Plan on going out once this year.

Yes Tunkwa Lake used to be closed to ice fishing like so many other lakes around the area. Our F&G club worked hard with the small lake fishery biologist to get more lakes opened. Personally I never could see any factual reason, other than politics, why these lakes where closed to ice fishing. There are lots of fish in the lakes and always have been. I am glad they are open and hope more will soon follow.

does anyone know if theres ice fishing on pavillion lake near cache creek? A friend of mine has a cabin there, recently purchased...he's not sure if people ice fish, altho there is rainbow trout in the lake.

Not 100% positive, but I'm pretty sure Pavillion is ice fishable.  Definitely check the regs though.

With the warmer weather we have had in the last few weeks, does anyone have any idea what the ice is like on Bridge Lake or any lakes in that general area ??
supposed to be heading up there on Saturday and want to make sure that the surfaces arent all slushed up and that ice fishing would be a possibility.

if you click on yesterday at the lake it downloads a quick video of the day and you can see how fast the snow melts etc.

I'm curious to see if they will be stocking tunkwa/leighton with more rainbows in the ice free season given the number of fish that are kept in the ice fishing season.  I know there's lots of fish in these lakes...but that is something that should be considered..if not already.

Also someone said there's nothing but politics in the way of not being allowed to ice fish.  And I don't have alot of experience with ice fishing, but is it not hard on the fish if you want to practice catch and release on a fish that is brought through the ice in frigid air temperatures.  I've heard their gills or eyes can freeze in literally seconds out of the water.  Also wouldn't a bait ban make it hard to ice fish?  do you suppose they should lift bait bans on lakes as well to allow for ice fishing.

It's just my opinion but I think less regulations isn't always a good thing.  And I consider the best fishing lakes to be the most heavily regulated, those are the lakes I specifically target.  I think a misconception is that regulations aren't necessary such as fly only or barbless hooks.  I totally disagree,  regulations is what made some lakes exceptional fishing lakes.  with many ice fishing lakes in all areas of bc adding new ones I don't think is necessary.  It's worked in the past, so why change it?
