Jig heads for steelhead
« on: December 08, 2009, 11:45:20 AM »

Any shops in the Vancouver area sell jig heads with heavy wire hooks that are suitable for salmon and steelhead?  I don't want to buy the whole jigs already tied, because they cost too much for rock magnets.

I cast jig heads...1/8 oz to 3/4.  I use gami hooks (size 2-2/0).  If you want me to cast some up for you, drop me an email.

I'm sure just about any shop in the area will carry them.  I know Reaction carries the "Aerojig" heads that are cast on Gamakatsu hooks.

The standard Gami jig hooks are too weak for steel. I have ordered some of their new 2x strong ones (only available in US) and will do a strength comparison against the Matzuo hooks that BR uses.

I just tied a bunch for a friend and they seem pretty strong.  Have you actually had them bend/break during battles with fish?

i've used gammies and rvrfshr hooks that rod uses (matzuo's) and found that both held fish just fine. gammie 1/0 black #604 or rod's #1 rvrfshr are what i use. 1/4 oz lead head and ur good to go.

I tied up some jigs using 604's but tossed them when I found Rod's jig kits.
On examination I found the 1/0 shank far too long and far too flexible - a combination that results in lost fish.
I certainly wouldn't use 1/0 hooks for fish that are often under 10lbs.

Here are the Gami 255's:

As far as I can tell the only way to get the heavy Matzuo's in Canada is through Bent Rod's jig kits, available from his site or from just about any fishing retailer in the LM. I have no idea what the model is but I use the #1's.
Ebay sellers and U.S. online retailers seem to only sell the thin wire bass style jig hooks.

by far the best deal out there are RVRFSHR pre poured jig heads with the Sickle hooks. I am painting mine this year with Pro Tec powder paint, although they worked just fine last year with plain lead head. In my opinion the only way you are going to bend this hook on a fish is if its fouled. I think that although the 1/0 hook seems big, it is perfect due to the fact that the fish is almost always hooked in the roof of the mouth so the extra gap and shank length help, #1's would be fine but they only come in 1/8 oz.
