Chilliwack River, January 3rd 2010
« on: January 03, 2010, 09:28:40 PM »

hit the flow today, decided to take the gear rod because the water wasnt supposed to be very good. Well... water was pretty nice in the mid river with 2foot approx. visibility. Got my first of the year of course cause i took the gear  ::)  ;D LOL

sorry no pic until my dad emails it to me which could be next year  >:(

so that makes 2 trips with the spey = 0
1 trip with gear = 1 hatchery bonked  ;)

MMM sure will be nice for dinner tomorrow

Or he will just end up being a rod short since he considers it stiff and will probably have a Steelhead snap it on him.
Just a question squirrel, how many fish (I'm talking coho and chum, etc) have you hooked on your 5 wt?

I own an old fiberglass 6wt rod, it is VERY solid and my 8 wt almost feels the same as it does. When I hook a fish however, although they feel the same the 8 wt still has a more backbone and doesn't seem to bend as much (might have to do with it being longer).

I would never use this rod on Steelhead, in fact I felt undergunned on coho and chrome chum (although chromer chum are brutes), and this was in a very SMALL and SLOW MOVING flow. Using that rod in the Vedder for those same fish would have been insane on my part. I would also say that I know what I am doing as far as fighting fish, I know when to give up and snap a fish off and NOT ONE of my fights this year lasted more than 5 mins on ANY gear. I'm sorry but a 5 wt (even an old very stiff 6 wt) is far too small to be targetting Steelhead in a fast flowing river like the Vedder, but I guess you won't take anyone's word for it until your 5 wt disintegrates in your hand.

Getting back on topic, good on ya HOOK.
I only have made 3 Steely trips this year and only 1 hit to show for it  :'(

very well stated FF  ;D

Squirrel - whats the biggest fish you have caught on that 5wt rod ?? im very curious to know

on my 5wt Sage i have caught and landed a 12lb ocean fresh chinook salmon, i was fishing for pinks at the time. The only reason i landed the fish was because no matter how much i tried the 8lb leader just would not bust  >:( I also fought the fish off the reel more so then using the rod itself, I also had a guy tail it for me in the water so i didnt risk snapping my rod trying to do it alone.

I agree that you should pony up a bit of cash and get yourself an 8wt setup. this will make your salmon/steelhead fishing way more enjoyable for you and especially the fish. Im sure you can get an entire setup at A&N for around $200-300 which is peanuts in the world of fishing tackle  ;)

HOOK - still waiting for the picture  >:(

Hook good to hear of your success, and not to steal your thunder.  But as far as the person flinging the 5 wt., how does that saying go, " even a blind squirrel finds a nut in the forest once in a while"  ;D.
