Or he will just end up being a rod short since he considers it stiff and will probably have a Steelhead snap it on him.
Just a question squirrel, how many fish (I'm talking coho and chum, etc) have you hooked on your 5 wt?
I own an old fiberglass 6wt rod, it is VERY solid and my 8 wt almost feels the same as it does. When I hook a fish however, although they feel the same the 8 wt still has a more backbone and doesn't seem to bend as much (might have to do with it being longer).
I would never use this rod on Steelhead, in fact I felt undergunned on coho and chrome chum (although chromer chum are brutes), and this was in a very SMALL and SLOW MOVING flow. Using that rod in the Vedder for those same fish would have been insane on my part. I would also say that I know what I am doing as far as fighting fish, I know when to give up and snap a fish off and NOT ONE of my fights this year lasted more than 5 mins on ANY gear. I'm sorry but a 5 wt (even an old very stiff 6 wt) is far too small to be targetting Steelhead in a fast flowing river like the Vedder, but I guess you won't take anyone's word for it until your 5 wt disintegrates in your hand.

I only have made 3 Steely trips this year and only 1 hit to show for it
