Listen to Rick. Him and I have been around long enough to know what works and what doesn't. The most important thing in which he mentioned is dont eat the starchy carbs after 3 or 4. Eat your greens with your dinner instead.

BTW any fad diets out there only last a short time for quick results. They never last and the weight comes back as soon as you go back to eating the way you used to.

Some good replies, one thing you can do that is very easy is to cut out your starchy carbs after 3-4 pm , in other words rice, potatoes, pasta etc are all cut out of your diet after 3-4pm in the afternoon, between that time and the time you go to bed just eat fibrous carbs ie salad, vegetables.... this way you still get to eat the food you enjoy you just eat it earlier in the day when you are still active and your body can process the carbs.

Another easy change you can make is the type of starchy carbs that you  eat, White potatoes , white rice and white pasta are all considered HIGH on the "glycemic index" which means they are harder for your body to process and are much more likely to end up as fat on your body, try eating brown rice, sweet potatoes (yams) or whole wheat pasta as these are LOW glycemic carbs and your body will process them to use as energy and will not turn them to fat as easily ...

I have helped many people lose alot of unwanted weight over the years, the biggest problem with diets is they are hard to stick to and most people can't and won't stick to them.... I prefer to call this a lifestyle change, you eat healthier to get healthier !! go by how you feel and look instead of how much you weigh..

Changing when you eat more so than what you eat can make a huge difference.

When it comes to exercise walking is one of the best activities there are, it is low impact on your joints and muscles and it keeps your heart rate at its highest % of fatburning, when you keep your heartrate between 135 and 140 bpm, your body is burning almost pure fat.... as soon as your heartrate is higher it starts burning higher % of muscle

when you perform your exercises ( cardio) also makes a big difference, try doing cardio before you eat in the morning, as long as you keep your heartrate below 140 bpm you will be burning almost all fat, because you haven't eaten yet there will be almost no stores of glycogen ( stored Carbs ) in your body which means your body will convert fat to energy in order to perform your exercises.

These are just a couple of hints that should help you out.

cheers Rick

That and stay away from Marlene's candy dish. ;)
Rick's bang on. I've lost more than a few by doing a cardio before breakfast, weights after supper.

2x in my life I've done 2 week fasts where basically just drank alot of water. Lost 14lbs. each time.
Do not think I have the will-power to do it these days.
Weird part is after the 2nd day your hunger levels off... ya do not get hungrier as the days go by sort of idea. I guess the body just switches itself over to start eating the fat around the body.

Actually the body starts feeding off the muscles, as well.  Not a good thing!

So does that mean you're 28 lbs. lighter or did you gain the weight back?  The problem with fasting is that you are making your body more proficient at converting all extra calories into fat.  The problem is this.... your body doesn't know you are starving it on purpose.  Although human beings have evolved greatly since being on earth we still react like a wild animal that doesn't know when its next meal will be.  A wild animal will gorge because it might not eat again for days.  Those extra calories are converted to fat to live off until it eats again.  This is how it works:

When we don't eat our metabolism slows down considerably whether or not you are doing it on purpose or not.   The body starts calorie conserving.  Now here's the kicker.  Now that you've slowed your metabolism down the minute you eat extra calories that will not get burned off the body quickly converts them into fat for future use in case your body is in starvation mode again.  Even fasting for as many as 12-15 hours is enough to slow your metabolism down!

Why do you think they say breakfast is the most important meal of the day? The reason is it's because you "break the fast".  This doesn't mean you have to have a big meal.  Just put something nutritious into your stomach and that will keep the metabolism revved up.  A person is much better off eating 5-6 meals a day so you never feel overly hungry.  Every meal should have 20-30 gr. of protein, a complex (starchy) carb, and a simple fibrous carb (fruit/ vegetables).

Rick is right on the money of when and what to eat.  I myself still have to eat some complex carbs at dinner ( 6-7:00) because I still have a reasonably fast metabolism but I try to avoid any carbs after that because chances are I'm not going to have an opportunity to do much more calory burning.  If I was to go out a play hockey or some other activity for a couple of hours that would be different.  If not, any additional carb calories  get converted to fat.

A good rule of thumb is to avoid eating anything white (white flour, sugar, potatoes, white rice, even milk because just about all adults are sensitive to lactose to a cetain degree).  No other animal on the planet consumes milk once its been weened.  There are other ways to get your RDA of calcium, vitamin A and D.  All of these afore mentioned foods are high on the glycemic index scale  as Rick mentioned.  Get a glycemic index booklet.  It will tell you which to avoid and when they are OK to eat.  The main problem with these foods is you feel like you have a quick energy burst because of the additional sugar in your blood but then you come crashing back down to earth feeling tired and listless.

The best way to loe weight is definitely a combination of exercising and following a good eating plan.  If you eat 500 less calories a day and do 500 more calories of activity per day you can lose two pounds of fat per week.  Anymore of a weight loss than that will never become permanent.  When people say they are losing several more pounds than that per week most of it is water weight.  I wouldn't worry so much about what your weight number is.  In fact, throw your scale out!  People get obsessed by stepping on it two and three times a day and if they don't like what they see it stresses them out.  When people are stressed out they are inclined to eat more.  Worry about your % of body fat.  You'll know if it's decreasing by the way your clothes fit.  You know you are losing weight if they are getting looser.  Weighing yourself once a week is plenty.

The thing is it's possible to lose 5-10% of your body fat and your weight may not change that much if you're exercising regularly and putting on lean muscle.  Muscle weighs 7 times as much as fat so you might only lose a small amount of weight over a 6 month to one year period.  If you haven't been a proponent of an exercise program in the past it's possible to put on 8-10 lbs of muscle while losing 20 lbs.of fat so it appears that you've only lost ten pounds but your body composition are drastically changed.  Another great advantage of putting on lean muscle tissue is that it increases your metabolism.  By taking the weight off at 1-2 pounds per week you are far more likely to keep it off because you've done it by changing your life style which is likely to become a permanent change.

One last tip.  You are far better off to have one cheat meal a week that you look forward to as a reward rather than cheating a little bit every day.  They don't call them "treats" if you have them every day!

Hey there, I will throw in my suggestion and hope it helps you reach your goal:

I used to be 225 pounds when I moved to calgary, and in the last 2 years I started biking to work ever day, and I weigh just under 200 now.  In reality, I don't care what my weight is, I am more interested in having the ability to work hard and recover fast...  I don't watch what I eat. I guess I ride about 75 km a week in the winter and a bit more in the summer (some times upto 200 a week if I am riding with my wife who is training). Its not too hard for the most part, as it is part of my daily routine.

Try to think of something you could do to burn an extra couple thousand calories a day, and you will see real benefits, first a bit of extra strength and endurance, then your fat will reduce.

Live on an island? Take a kayak to work.
Live near a bike path? Take a bike to work.
Live in abbotsford and work in vancouver? Sell your parking stall and drive to burnaby and ride the rest of the way.

Ect etc.

Good luck!

I hear you!  The problem is once you have" been there" and achieved something that is truly difficult our memories are just too darn good and get in the way.  If you're like me I'm sure you've uttered more than once, " I remember when I used to be able to....." or at least you will in another ten years.

It was always easier to achieve a goal, especially when it came to fruition because both the body and the will are so strong and you're not about to give up.  But like I said.... you remember what you once were and what you could once do.... and of course who wouldn't want to continue to be like that?  But once you get older, if the goals aren't there it becomes increasingly more difficult to stay in the same condition.

I've competed all my life at something.  Through my forties I competed at the national level in sprinting and was fortunate enough to tetired on top so I can't complain.  As you know when you're training 6 days a week and hitting the gym it was fairly easy to stay at 7-8 % body fat without altering your diet at all.  I've getting closer to realizing those days are gone, but none the less, I have difficulty letting it go.  I still train hard enough that if I really wanted to I could fine tune for 6 months and be back in the game but the desire just doesn't seem to be there anymore even though I'll be in a new age category this year.

Now I just want to stay under 10% but it involves eating clean a whole lot more than I really want to.  I'm such a sucker for homemade desserts but if I say I'm going to cut them out for a month or two to get there then I just do it.  My major problem is my body is pretty beaten up from all that I've done over the years....enough arthritis and scar tissue in the joints to be bothersome, knee and shoulder surgeries, would rather be fishing at our cabin at  the lake, etc. so I have to be content to lift school girl weights.  Train smarter not harder has to be my motto now.  Pride has to take a back seat.  Am I happy with that?  No... but c'est la vie! LOL

Thank you to each & everyone of you for such great info !!!
Lots of super advice.
I have memories of my past being in top notch physical condition.
For a time (over 1 yr. ) did rope skipping for 30 minutes 5 days a wk. (sometimes 6 days per wk.) The sweat was just dropping off my body after 5 minutes but continued on for the next 25 minutes to finish up.  My weight was 142 lbs then ...with very little fat on my body.
Then for years I cleaned 2 small buildings...then a small mall (9 washrms included) & to finish up ...cleaned a gov. office with 75 desks. It was go go go at double & triple speed..."moving"alot.
But floor waxing for 8 or so years was alot of standing lifting using wet mops ...wax mops...but been out of all that work for 5 yrs so my body has put on weight & alot of it is just being undisciplined... drank too much beer late at night (6 beer are not alot for some people but drinking 6 beers 1x weekly then going to bed...after a few weeks the weight slowly gets put on.
When I was in shape it just felt so great...now that I have 40 lbs of excess on a medium frame...physically just feel weighted down.
Ironically when I fasted for 2 weeks (2x in my life) I did keep the weight off for a long period of time because I really watched my calories & did alot of exercise... Again thanks for all the info everyone. Now to find a healthy dressing for the green salids (maybe olive oil or grapeseed oil...some say Paul Newman dressings are good) I haven't stayed over-night in the hospital in my life & if I want to keep my record I BETTER GO BACK TO MY ONCE PRACTISED LIFESTYLE.

Try making this one.   I just use a measuring cup, throw it in a jar and shake. (no sugar, no preservatives, all natural)

1/4 c. rice vinegar
1/4 c. wine vinegar
1/4 c. balsamic vinegar
1/4 c. Udos oil ( it's an Omega 3-6-9 blend)  A little pricey...substitute olive oil if you wish

Pour into a jar... add garlic powder, a little Italion seasoning or Mrs. Dash and a couple of tbsp. of dijon mustard and shake

Udo's 3.6.9 is awesome. I use it as my EFA of choice. In shakes, salads wherever I can.

Mrs.Dash = YUCK!!! I got so sick of it when dieting for a bodybuilding show...DOUBLE YUCK ;)

So your officially retired Rick? You had a great run and were always in tip top shape. Congrats to you. I'm not going to retire but I am taking a year off. I am moving from the Bodybuilding to Male Muscle Model. Even the so called tested shows guys are using. They rarely test anyone and if they are not using actual steroids their using growth hormones. I dont really want to go in knowing I dont even have a chance. So Muscle Model gives me another way to express myself and something to achieve.

Have you thought about doing more core stuff now that your retired? I recently bought a TRX Suspension trainer and let me tell you its an incredible workout. I am using it on my clients as well. My own personal workouts include 1-2 days of just core on top of my regular workouts.
