Fishing Jigs For Stealhead?
« on: January 07, 2010, 11:13:39 PM »

I finally after many years of fishing stealhead, I caught one using a pink lead head jig.

I was drift fishing it under a float but I am really wondering how to use them in low clear water under a floats or how others do this.
What is a good way to rig this?
I have also heard of certain way of drifting these jigs to give them action or motion.

Any ideas?

Main line - float - weight - leader - jig

A dead drift with the float would be best, that would give nice natural pulsating movement with the material on the jig. There is always an exception to the rule, but the jigging motion usually works best for coho or pinks.

Try reading this - http://www.bentrods.ca/bc-fishing-articles.htm

There's also a pretty good article about twitching jigs here - http://www.steelheaduniversity.com/Twitchin.html

I have used jigs successfully in the relatively slower, deeper water of the Stamp.   1/8 oz jigs in that case.     On the Chilliwack the flow generally seems too fast for jigs.     Will 3/8 oz jigs work successfully in the fast flow?

More questions:

Does anyone ever use rubber on their jigs of any kind or even mr. twister style?

Whats better marabou or bunny fur?

I run 1/4 oz most of the time. During the mid winter low waters that seemingly occur every year, I'll drop down to a 1/8 oz.

I often tip my jigs with half a rubber worm or a mr twister.

And I personally fish rabbit fur over marabou, due to the fact that it is more durable and easier to tie with.

type in steelhead jig into google and look at the options. Hackle jigs, rabbit jigs, all schlappen, all marabou, combo's, pink worm jigs, jigs made specifically for fishing BAIT! there are so many colours and styles that it doesn't much matter, the key to jigs is that they get you down in the zone and keep you there. Fish em hard, and with confidence. Take a few colours and go. I'm a finatic and have tons, others only have 2 or 3. keep to what you know works.

Great!

Thanks for the info.  I to like the rabbit fur best and have made some jig with rubber.  If you crazy glue the rubber against the head of the jig you never have to push it back up...ever, works real nice.

Find yourself some better hooks. That will bend on the first fish you hook and you will be left disappointed.

I've had better luck with the tail facing up and away from the hook instead of down.

I have little experience for steelies with jigs but the steelie smolts in rivers will hammer them when they are cast out and twitched in.

And get good jig heads with strong hooks.  I got mine at Berry's but they are made by Searun tackle in Coquitlam.

I also caught many coho this year by sticking a float on and twitching the jig through pools.  Definatley not a standard technique as it really stirs up the water but the fish didn't seem to care.
